Yes. I see what they are doing, but thanks.

I suspect not because he always said there were several carriages on each lathe, so they would be a good bit larger than these.
look at the size

The lathe he used was so huge that there were several operators. Each sat in a chair that was attached to the carriage and rode back and forth with the tooling.
Those barrels weigh in at 120 tons.
That's a machinist! The shit he could do with lathes, mills, taper grinders and the like could bring a tear to the eye of anyone who knew anything about metalworking.
No one cares about your grandpa. Why would you come into this thread just to try and knock the OP down a peg when all he was doing was talking about his job and taking some pride in his work? Oh I know cuz you are a troll and always have been. You should go slither back under the rock that is OTD where your kind belong

There's nothing wrong with being an operator, but it doesn't make you a machinist.
I ran those at the metal fab shop, the lathe was around 60 years old, had an old gear hobbing machine that was the only automated tool I used and it was still a lot of manual work

I started on gear hobs. Spent 3 years on them. They're very cool machines but not much of a challenge once you get them down.
I like the CNCs. Shorter cycle times but theres a lot more math involved. And every job is something different. Quote:

Interpretating blueprints and using them to set up program and operate your machine, regardless of what it is, to get a good finished product is the definition of a machinist. I've ran manual and CNC and currently use those manual bridgeports u posted a picture of....when I don't need to be accurate anyway. Ego aside, if these Haas dont make me a precision machinist then nothing does, and machinists are for fairy tales.

here's a couple of gears off one of my machines, it was a plate roller used in the shipyards, to install it we had to cut a hole in the floor and dig it out to a depth of 3 feet. the gear was 7' across, the roll it ran was 20' and could roll up to 3" armor plate... the fucker was a monster

here's the million year old cincinati lathe. nothing worked on it when we got it other than the motor, I got everything working on it between jobs, every detail on it was manual which is what I prefer for a lot of things

I'm a machinist. Manual mill, manual lathe, EDM, and CNC program and operator. My factory does mainly tool and die and injection molding but I also do prototyping and CNC art.

@pris That's a serious gear dude. We don't fuck with stuff that big here. Biggest we do is a couple feet in diameter. Mostly transmission gears for tractors. That must have taken days to cut.

Cnc art? Never heard of that before. Cool as shit though. How would you get into something like that? Haha
No one has suggestions for my original question? Oh well, you've succeeded to entertain, which helped temporarily. Thanks guys
