Brown fluff

Hi

I have one of those ready made substrate kits, and I've recently dunked it after the first flush. I've already harvested some beauties from the second flush, but now there's a sort of dark brown fluff (think of mycelium, only chocolatey brown) over about an 8th of the surface. The mushrooms I've already harvested look fine, and they're pretty damn big (which I'm so proud of :laugh:).

I've had a look at the contamination area on the main site, but couldn't relate the brown fluff to any of those specified contams.

Sorry, can't post a pic, if it gets desperate in deciding what this is, I'll see what I can do about getting a pic.

I have seen this before on a cake and didn't know what it was either. Now being the paranoid dude I am, I removed the cake and scraped it clean under running water and dunked it over night in a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 tablespoon of bleach. It recovered and did well and no sign of the brown stuff after that. I didn't experience any ill effects from this, but use at your own discretion.

It's probably the beginning of a mold problem, mold can come in just about any color.  Keep an eye on its progression, but don't hold out too much hope of getting more from this substrate :frown:

Anything besides white is probably a contam.
