question about aquarium heaters.
    #3552125 - 12/28/04 10:29 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Is the dial on the top of the aquarium heaters a thermostat or just a voltage regulator? my PMP seem to flutuate temps. I am using this heater: http://www.petco.com/product_info.asp?fa...aters&ct3=#

Sort of both. You set dial where you want . Internal diode thermostat keeps temp where you set it.

you know it's wierd. AFOAF seen that heater at petco, and the one at walmart looks the exact same. But the brand at petco for that price is 5-15 gallon tanks where the one at walmart is for 30+ gallon tanks (same price)

The one at walmart is a higher wattage..walmart is definatly cheaper then Petco for anything you find that compares..you can find varied wattages for every brand made for whatever size tanks people may have. i'm sure walmart had some 50 watters for 5-15 gal tanks, they were probably just cheaper.

i did actually get it at WalMart alot cheaper than petco. their bubble bars were also way cheaper. so are temp fluctations normal with a PMP...its my first one.

:mushroom2: How bad of a fluctuation are we talking about?  They usually fluctuate between 5-7 degrees, in my experience.  :mushroom2:

No and thats why its best to NOT use them for PMP's and stick the heaters in the TNT...just keep the PMP at room temp..coolers better because if you fluctuate to high you can harm the growth. To cool things are just a little slower.

To use it better you should create a TNT/PMP in one..the TNT style heating will heat the PMP more evenly and fully and keep it more insulated for less temp fluctuations. Then this adds standing water near your tub. Of course you could insulate your tub too but wrapping a blanket around it or putting your PMP in a second tub filled with insulation or something to that affect. I still would remove heat if it were me unless your talking under 60-65 degrees.

a not on the walmart model. I bought a 200 watt model and it keeps a 60 gallon aquarium at 80-78F across the span... its definately a value for the money

Not sure what you meant by this...I think something got cut off with the "a not on the walmart model?"

What I was refering to was someone saying that the heater in the link (which is 50 watts) is only meant to heat up a 5-15 gallon tank but one at walmart that was the same price as the one in the link would heat up 30+ gallons..it must be because the one that is for 30+ gallons is a higher wattage...just at walmart you can get a better deal per watt for your heater then Petco, its not that the heaters are better per se though because walmart would have a heater that would work for 5-15 gallons too, just cheaper then the one in the link. If you meant something more you'll have to clarify
