No luck. Need help with aquarium heater setup.
    #525042 - 01/18/02 11:34 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi everyone. I put a post up last night and you still might see it around cuz I got alot of usefull info. I had a cold room problem. Temps in the room are only 58-61degrees.
I was advised to get a 50watt aquarium heat and stick it in a jar/conatainer of water, should have worked. Thing is, it automaticaly shuts off once the temp of the jar/container reaches it 88 degree max temp. I was wondering if I m suppose to get a cheaper aquarium heater model that dooesnt shut off at all once it reaches a temp, and just regulate it myself by turning it down instead myself it it goes sky high.
My question is, if anyone can give me anymore aquarium heater tips, I would love you for it cuz this heat problem is the only thing standing in my way. Im talking fruiting because i already have a seperate incubator that works real well for the colonizin. With the set up i have now it only goes up to 65degrees, but with a nice 96% humidity with nothing blocking the evaperated steam. Thanks. Hope u can help out there!

Go to home depot get a reflector light with a clamp rated to 100W and the largest light bulb to fit it. The light looks like a stainless or aluminum cooking bowl turned upside down. Then use a black gabbage bag to prevent light from entering teranium. Its an ugly set up but very cost effective.

I had an aquarium heater that was giving me trouble. I hate them things because they are so hard to keep from breaking. Real pains in the arse. But if you put them in a empty jar and turn them on they won't go off and for humidity get an ultrsonic humidifer. I got one from salvation army that works great. Get a few feet of tubing from Ace hardwear and you are set.

Peace

That sounds alright but i live in a remote town and I dont have a home depot. Any aquarium heater tips? Its all I have. Or what about one of those reptile rocks?...I dont know. All i have here is a small hardware store and a petstore. So something thats commomly sold would be easier for me to get at the hardware store.

Northernsoul,

Are you talking about a fruiting chamber or an incubation chamber?

fruiting chamber, I have a incubator already. I need a temp of 80degrees constantly using an aquarium heater. Iv egot alot of responses saying that they work real well, so Im gonna stick with it. I just need to know if i need some terrarium insulation, a bigger higher wattage heater, a dry jar(no water)how about half full?(nope, just finished that experiment, didnt werk) or A heater that stays on and wont shut off at a certain temp?....I asked a buddy to get some insulation from a constuction site so i can wrap that arountd the chamber for less heat loss. This room is 60 all the time and the terrarium stays that temp as well, good humidity with the aquarium heater though.
anyways, *fingers crossed* ill figure it out with everyones help.

Maybe you could use a small enough jar that you would have room for 2 of them, 2 going at 88 should be good. I hear the recomended temp for fruiting is 74-78. If not hardware store would probably have a space heater.

Yeah, thanks chemical, but we dont have an enclosed closet in this hose and heating this 9x10 room would cost too much $$ at 80degrees especialy..and up here in canada its very cold right now here so it would cost big bucks! I need something inside the chamber.....anybody??? do i need a hotter aquarium heater??

IMHO you need to reduce the size of the space to heat rather than try to heat a larger space. Duct-tape and plastic sheeting works wonders.

damn...that sucks dude. my aquarium heater is adjustable. try to find one of those and if it's possible get a higher wattage heater. do you have heater blanket thing. you could use that in conjunction with the aquarium heater. BUT, you only needs temps of around 70-75 degrees.

All (or almost all) aquarium heaters can be adjusted to reach higher temps than that. They are calibrated from the factory to not go higher than about 85 degrees so you won't fry your fish by accident.

You just have to POP OFF the little adjuster knob from it's post. This post is fluted, and the knob isn't glued on, it's just a snap-fit. Once the knob is off, you can then turn the post as much as you want until you reach the desired temperature, then snap the knob back on.

So now your heater might have an adjustment range of (for example) maybe 80 to 95 degrees, rather than the factory-set adjustment range of 70 to 85 degrees. If it still isn't high enough, repeat the procedure.

Nothing to it, trust me.

Some tips:

1) Insulate. Use a blanket, or try a cooler as your container.

2) Two is better than one. Use two jars w/ heaters. I would be cautious in rigging your heater, although it is a great idea, you need to be careful not to radiate too much heat in one spot, you may create a large temperature gradient throughout your chamber. By having two jars w/ heaters you can heat from both ends and will get more even heat.

Hi josh, thanks for the tips. Ill be getting some wall insulation today, and I plan to tape and cover my whole fruiting chamber with about 3 inches of it. I will be getting another heater as well today from the petstore. I t does make sense that only one heater might not distribute the heat 100%.
Anyways, thanks for your 2 cents, Ill let u know how it goes!

Hi pinksharkmark! Thanks for your reply, I apreciate every reply I can get:) You sound right with breaking off the dial on the heater, although I tried this with mine and its pretty much staying there. Its a fully submersable heater so its built pretty tight. I plan on getting a cheaper model, that if you dont watch, youll be having fried fish when u wake up and look into your fishbowl:)....Ill get 2 of those and tell u how it all turns out....thanks!
