hey guys.
quick question for ya
tell me if this will work

i have a big rubber made tub that im going to be turning into an incubator. i plan on filling the bottom with water then putting a submersible aquarium heater in the water. Then i'm going to put a wire mesh above the water line and place my jars and casings on the mesh. Will this provide for an appropriate incubator, or will the humidity become a problem?

if you do this, keep the foil on your jars!!! it's gonna get drippy wet in there!!!

for another 5 $, get another rubbermaid on top and put jars in there! makes it easier to clean and the outside of your jars stay dry!!!

I have been using a rubbermaid container w/ a tupperware container that has a fishtank heater in it at the bottom of the rubbermaid container. I cut a small notch on the tupperware containers lip so the cord fits and the top still seals good. Becuase water would always collect when i just had the top on the cord. i would tape it off but it would still get through. Now there is hardly any moisture. The only thing is I have been trying to make time to get another setup going and finally have the stuff. I put 50 jars on top of this heater setup and a temp gauge in there. The temp has been staying a little above 70 (Also put a sheet in first then layed the heater and jars i; trying to keep heat in). And I have always had slow growth in the past from not enough heat. I kow this is probably alot of jars for this heater setup but would I get more heat if I just put another bigger container under the current one and filled it with water and put the heater in there? I had put 30 jars in at first and my temp was around 78-80 so the excess jars is probably the problem. But I dont want to have a ton of containers sitting around part full of jars. Anybody try this before? What about one large container with (2) heater setups in it. Would that be better. Or a peice of flat insulation on the top and maybe sides? Is the tupperwater container insulating to much of the heat?

how many Watts is your heater??

get a bigger one! ie: 200w. problem solved!

humitidy won't be a problem.

Do as CG told you to do...then you won't have water dripping on your jars.
Just get another rubbermaid and stick it inside the other rubbermaid.
Then you can put your jars in the top one.

I like using a shorter rubbermaid for the top one...that way you plenty of room in it for water.
Like this as an example.

Why not put the heater and the jars in the same container and rubber band plastic around the top? I would think that the warm water directly on the jars would actually keep them warmer. Mabey insulate the outside with a sleeping bag or something.

I think you could completely seal the jar using ceran (sp?) wrap, glue and a rubber band. Not enough preassure would build up to force the water molecules through the miniscule holes. If the jars were completely sealed, is there any other reason this wouldn't work?

Id like to add one thing, make sure u have a water line that u always maintain because when it starts to dry up and has less water, u will get a real hot incubator. thats the only downfall to it, is stable temp cannont be maintained if u dont keep the water up.

I have 2 little tubs in a bigger tub though. 1 rubbermaid total.I have 2 smaller plastic tubs that hold a dozen jars each so thats all i need for right now. later im planing on constructing a real incubator, witch will have plenty of room. maybe ill document it to help some people around here.
