Strengthening Synasthesia (sp?)

One time, I was tripping and I went to see a film aNd I was so into it I experienced the same sensory stimulus as the characters I was watching. Like for example if I saw people in Antarctica the air of the movie theater felt really cold and clean, and if an actor put his hand in fire I would really distinctly get the feeling of fire on my own hand. I assume this is something to do with the way psychedelics can break down boundaries, you know between what you are witnessing and what you are remembering, or between what you imagine and what you feel.

Synasthesia is probably not the right term. It's sort of happened a few times before and since but it never again happened as well as this one time. Does anyone else get this from watching a film or any other way? Is it possible to strengthen this mental ability of creating false sensation and if so what does one do? Meditation? Let's get more in the old felt presence of immediate experience? Lots of crack?

Well I don't know about strengthening the effects you describe...but yeah "synesthesia" isn't really the right term for it :wink:

"synesthesia" is generally in reference to the mixing of two senses: where you hear colour, see sounds, ect.

Though, now that I think of it, what you describe may just be a very SPECIFIC (and rather more complicated) form of synesthesia. Instead of simply feeling the colours you are seeing, you are feeling the CONCEPTS that you are seeing?

I've had this happen before as well, becoming part of the movie :smile:

synaesthesia is like using all your senses at once, not dividing them into smell,touch,etc but one giant amount of awareness of stimulus, be it genuine or imagined

any time that thesenses crossover it is syaesthesia - even if one of the senses is mind, so I say it is happenning:
movie ->visual & auditory -> memory & thought -> cold body and wind sensations.

usually it is when a flavour brings up a color or sound... But I don't see why it needs to be a narrow definition. when raging input or sustained sensory feed spreads beyond its region I would expect activation in neighbouring parts of the cortex or memory areas that normally are activeated by them:
