Fear or Laziness?
    #3486046 - 12/12/04 12:09 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

There are two kinds of sufferers in this world: those who suffer from a lack of life, and those who suffer from an overabundance of life. I've always found myself in the second category. When you come to think of it, almost all of human behavior and activity is not essentially any different from animal behavior. The most advanced technologies and craftsmanship bring us at best up to the super-chimpanzee level. Actually, the gap between say Plato or Nietzsche and the average human is greater than the gap between that chimpanzee and the average human. The realm of the real spirit, the true artist, the saint, the philosopher, is rarely achieved. Why so few? Why is world history and evolution not stories of progress but rather this endless and futile addition of zeroes. No greater values can develop. Hell, the Greeks 3,000 years ago were just as advanced as we are. So what are these barriers that keep people from reaching anywhere near their real potential? The answer to that can be found in another question, and that's this - which is the most universal human characteristic?

Fear of it not being apreciated is one thing that holds many back.
Lacking imagination is another. Suppressing ones imagination weather it be threw intoxicants/or threw growing up in a home that is non conducive to being open minded.

It all comes down to a choice when you go for schooling. Do you A labor and work under someones. Or do you B learn the arts and become a master of what you do. With that comes preserveirence that you will become master of your trade and that you will inovate new ideas as you progress further and further into new ideas and manifest them in the endless on going progression of being a master.

I voted laziness, because most people are too lazy to do the work needed to overcome their fears.

What about it? If you are asking if thats a quote. That could be my synthetic imagination kicking in sythesising already learned ideas into a new idea of my own. Now if I was using creative imagination it would have purely poped out from no prior knowledge. But I have seen the movie and could not tell you if thats where I got the idea.

I voted laziness too. People fear being forced to put forth more than minimal effort.

i think fear is something that we are conditioned towards, laziness seems to be universal from the beginning of history.

Naw... the original post is an exact quote from Waking Life. I saw it last night. Fear & laziness in varying amounts in each person, I say.
