Going on Vacation, How do I Keep My Cakes Alive?!
    #345902 - 06/21/01 10:07 AM (22 years, 9 months ago)

I'm leaving town for 11 days, and I dont know what to do to keep my cakes alive. They won't be able to get humidity or air exchange, and I don't know whether or not to leave the hood light on or not. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't care if the cakes progress or mature any, just so long as I can resume where I left off when I get back without the cakes dieing. I don't know how long they can go wihout fresh air and humidity. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Put them in a ziplock or tupperware container and put them in the fridge.

I think its safe to store the cakes in the fridge (in something sealable to
keep em from evaporating or contaminating) if theres no pinning or fruiting
happening yet. Since theres no light they wont fruit till you return.

i live with my parents still. I dont think the fridge would work. how about a full size freezer? is that too cold for them? or is there any other way to keep them alive? if i just cut off all light will they still live without air and humidity in a big cooler/terrerium?

How will I know if the cakes are dead? Do they change color or anything? Also, I'm growing at room temp. (65 degrees), is this warm enough for the cakes and if not, whats the best way to up temp.?

I'm still pretty new at growing mush, but I have two heat lights, although I am trying to get a heat pad (available at any pet store for a bout $15). If the cakes aren't 100% colonized and they are no longer growing, that would be a good hint that they are dead. For the previous poster, you can put the cakes in a cold, dark area and they will stop growing, or really slow down, but still live. I recomend growing at about 80 f but don't let it gop above 90 or they might get fried and die. Good luck !!

Always remember, the glass is ALWAYShalf-full!

Read P. cubensis Growth Parameters .

>and if not, whats the best way to up temp.?
Use 2 identical tubs, 1 filled 4in with water, submerge an aquarium heater set to 25?C in it, put the second tub into the water, put the jars into the second tub, cover with a blanket.

whoa Anno  good advice. My monkeys say why, why dont you just leave them alone for 11 days. In order for them to be the same when you come back 11 days later would require you to have a TIME MACHINE . Peace

dude, just do this -

when your parents get into the car, say you forgot something, go inside, get something, put the stuff in the fridge, and go into the car... then, when you get back from vacation, just be the first one inside and get em...

Keep Trippin' and Blazin'
