"winterizing" a reishi log/tree
    #3399777 -

does anybody know how i can protect this log from the snow and ice this winter? i'm sure the stumps will be fine since they have a mycelial network underground, but the mycelium on the log will be exposed to the elements and i'm afraid it will not survive the winter. i would like it to fruit next year when it warms up.

Depending on how hard of a freeze you're expecting, you could just bury it, but it looks like you'd need a backhoe for that  .  I remember a post where someone merely wrapped their logs in heavy duty plastic garbage bags and left them in a garage and had great fruiting the following season.  I didn't look too deep in the post, but are you sure those are lucidum?  The ones out in the woods could very well not be true lucidum/reishi, and might actually be perennial, and even if they're not, the odds are pretty good that they will survive a freeze [they've been going through it for thousands of years out there].  Ganoderma in general are some of the most resilient mushrooms out there, especially once the mycelium is established.  Other folks who live in 'hard freeze' areas might have some input here. . .I've only played around with reishi logs here in the balmy PNW; we're lucky if some snow even sticks.

i wanted to bury it, but as you noticed, i would need a backhoe to do so. i'll still at least push a bunch of sand up against the sides. maybe it will help if i can find nothing better to do with it.

i guess it would be more appropriate to say that i assume i have reishi growing, since i didn't really put any time into identifying it. i do not know of anything else that looks like reishi and grows here and it showed up the same week that two of my friends found some reishi (that i did positively id).

Maybe you could cover it with a straw mat ?

You - ---- . you - do look red .

I am sure it'll survive - I dont know how to prove it to ya - even after scanning the ole web 'google style' - but I am sure that it survives the frost !

If you read growing man's for it you'll see that many reccomend spawn pluggin tree peices with Reishi before frost in time to eat tha wood then chill through winter and fruit in spring .

- Use Gremlins !

That is for sure reishi.
Banking the sides with sand is a good idea.

I've never seen a log without bark that was
out of the ground fruit reishi.
I've seen Ganoderma appalattum fruit
from logs that were without bark.

Straw would also help.

I've never seen reishi any further than a foot and
half away from the ground growing on trees.

They are either growing from the roots
or very close to the ground.
