dowel plug spawn and log cultivation
    #1608956 -

I am thinking about trying out some dowel plug spawn. I have a couple of questions: can the dowels be frozen with no ill effect?

I read that winter logs are preferred for sugar content, are spring logs worth using?

You cannot freeze the dowel this will kill the fungus. As far as using spring logs it is hard to say. I have only ever used fall or late winter / early spring cut logs. Using winter cut logs simply leads to faster colonization (and therefore less competitor pressure and higher yeilds over all) than spring cut. Also spring cut wood may be more resistant to fungal ingress (more capable of fighting off fungus, even on dowel rods). If you want to use spring cut wood I would suggest that you experiment with oyster mushrooms. I imagine that colonization will be slower, but that you should have some success. I mean, they are fungi after all and they eat lignin and cellulose and logs are made of both of those compounds. If you have a supply of spring cut logs and are eager to get experimenting give them a try! If you are patient however you may meet with more success for your efforts. Good luck.

When are winter cut logs innoculated? If I were to innoculate immediately after I cut the logs cut in December, they would most definately freeze. One more question: is there anyway to store the plugs?
