If humans were categorized by humans
    #3386548 - 11/19/04 11:04 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

If humans were living in the wild, and had lost all the tools and knowledge we had gained, other than the earliest, simplest tools like stones and sticks, and we were categorized like we categorize animals, what would we be, naturally?

For example-
Diet:
Behavior:
Shelter:
Reproduction:
Special Adaptations:

Natural humans, without guns and knives and bows and arrows, would be hard pressed to hunt predators, like killing and eating a lion or wolf, or capturing prey, like a deer or such. Would these humans be vegetarians? What would they naturally live in?

It is like viewing ourselves, without our rather recent civilization's progress, as we view others with our civilization's progress.

Communal omnivores. Construct shelters utilizing natural formations and local materials. Reproduce sexually. Males of the species specialize in hunting while females care for young and "nest". Have prehensile digits allowing easy manipulation of stones, etc. for use as tools. Hip orientation allows for bipedal movement, as well as freeing up the forelimbs for other tasks. Predate upon wild herbivores/small animals, gather/consume local fauna, in turn are predated upon by larger carnivores.

It's extremely humorous how seriously humans take themselves, when really they are just hairless primates trying to survive on this natural planet like all other life. Rarely does a human have any experience humbling enough to remind him of this though, so it is forgotten, and arrogance developes in the species as a whole

For special adaptations, humans are suited for long endurance running.

actually
all you need's a sharpened stick

seen a video of this guy in africa.. don't as me where I don't know. huntin this wildebeest. and by hunting, I mean running after it all day long, eventually catching it when it has collapsed from exhaustion, and throwing a sharp stick into its side (which is really not needed, but IMO it's more symbolic.. "I killed this" as opposed to "I found this laying here dead already")

no way in hell -I- could do that, but supposedly how a lot of the most early hunting we did as a species went down.

True! Dogs are man's best friend.

I forgot to add...

"An unusual trait among this species is an inablility to find balance within its natural environment. They exhibit a tendancy to collect more than they need at a given time, prefering to "hoard" resources for storage their dens. This has a deleterious effect on the local flora and fauna."

This thread is hilarious.

Why speculate what you can look up in books? :P Most of the things everyone is saying are just what they know to be a description of "primitive man".

And this kind of speculation is just going to keep rolling forward, following evolutionary progress.

I mean, if you go back "far enough" for this application, you don't factor in tools. Then if you don't go back quite as far, there's tools.

I guess I just don't see the point.. heh..

Then you aren't trying hard enough to see the point, and you are not involved with an intimate relationship with the point.

Duh, you don't need any demonstratable reason for the point to make sense to you, you just have to know that it makes sense. :smirk:

i'm pretty sure the use of tools preceded the evolution of modern man.

That's my whole point, man...

the use of tools was PART of the evolution of man TOWARDS the state of modern man.

Where do we draw the line??

I suppose its pointless. I just think it's fun talking about people like we are alien observers. Sometimes I feel like I AM an alien observer. Most people act so differently than I do that I find it hard to believe that ALL of our personality, character, etc, is determined by nature, nurture or even both. The realm of spirit, IMHO, is necessary in order to put the picture together.

Where do we draw the line indeed? There rarely is ever a line, it is just shades of progression, and I guess it depends on how dark or light someone sees these shades of gray as

But with modern tools, man starts to see himself as different from the animals, because of precisely these tools. Without these tools we are just primitive animals, rather than primitive animals with houses and tools as we are today
