since I think that this is a very interesting topic I will start it this year again :wink: ...

Here a short summary about what I have found out about the type of giant puffball that is growing here where I live:
  • They are growing in the fields on the hills and therefore I think that they do not like ground that is too wet.
  • Usually the start to fruit in late summer/beginning of autumn when the temperatures during the day are high but get lower in the nights.
  • They like a low PH value since they do not grow when there is limestone around.
    I have measured the PH value of the soil the were growing on and it was between 5-5.5 .
  • Where they grow the produce kind of huge fairy rings in the fields:



  • After some time the fruit body itself turns to a brown mass that has the consistence of a sponge. This brown mass are the spores:




This year I have cloned some tissue of it onto cardboard agar and they took quite well:

It was funny that the mycelium seemed to invade the substrate faster from the sides
where the tissue has touched the substrate then from the actual tissue itself:

One of the clones did exceptionally well since it formed a kind of fruit body on the cardboard agar:


When I transformed the mycelium from the cardboard agar to peroxided agar it turned out that it does not like the peroxide? at all.
It just refuses to grow on it:


So I think I will have to transfer it to another media ...

Anyone else any experiences with growing the giant puffball ?

I've no experience but I am very interested. I just started eating puffballs this year and they are grrreattt.

Have you tried any multispore projects?

Yeah, once I tried to germinate the spores but all the plates ended up with contaminations.
That is why I tried it with clones this year ...

Very cool Raga, are you planning on attempting indoor cultivation, or outdoor? I would think birdseed spawn (thick) set up either partially buried in soil or just covered witha thick mat of straw might be enough to get a fairy ring "started", it would then grow into the organic material in the sod and become self-sustaining?

Hmm, probably both. First I will try to get enough spawn to experiment with.

Sound like a good plan. Hope it will grow on WBS spawn.

Around here, giant puffballs mostly pop up in woods (perhaps a different species), and they seem to like ravines and hillsides--it suprised me to see them growing in mature forests, often on hillsides so steep there is very little organic material on the sloping surface, mainly dirt. Perhaps next year I should do a little cloning myself, if I can find a nice fresh specimen, and we can swap cultures--certainly sounds like the 2 puffballs exploit different environments.....

If you achieve success I'd be interested in a culture. I'd be particularly interested in experimenting with establishing a permanent outdoor growing area.

If you prepare them properly the taste very good.
Here you can see how my girlfriend cooks some of the mushroom tissue I have cloned :wink::

Once my parents had success with growing one outdoors just by throwing the left overs of a giant puffball into their garden.
But they only grew there for one year - was probably not the right environment for them ...

Heh, a friend had a story about that.
they found a bunch and a kid jumped on one. a cloud of spores came out. they then started throwing them around.
