Reusing Jars

I innoculated 12 1/2 pint jars last Friday using BRF and vermiculite and the ramsey seal. There is a smell comming from all the Jars. Six of them have weird yellow stains where I innoculated. Anyway I guess I did something wrong. I pressure cooked for one hour and allowed the jars to cool. The jars sat for two weeks with no smell. I made sure they were ok before I innouculated. I sterilized the needle with an alcohol lamp before each innoculation. I innoculated using the oven rack. Every jar has a smell. There is no pure white growth. I guess I have to start over. What else can I do to be more safe. Should I not use the ramsey seal? Can I reuse the jars instead of throwing them away? Please respond. Where did I go wrong?

I do not reuse my small jars but it is o.k. to if you are concerned about it take the jars put them in sink bucket etc... and add some bleach water 10% solution and then presure cook them. I have never used the ramsey seal but I hear it sucks ass. yes you do need to start over. It sounds like you did things right, don't let it get you down though. Good luck

ok here is a method for reusing jars that i can vouch for. in this case plastic jars were used which is especially risky because as you know bacteria can survive on polymers... find the strongest (hehe hospital grade will do) anti-bacterial surface cleaner (concentrates, toilet cleaning types, anything! just make sure it says hospital grade!). you then mix up a reasonable solution of it (the stronger the better) in a small jar. take a cloth or something and wipe down all your jars COMPLETELY, inside thoroughly, outside jar rims, lids top and inside bottom, rims too... rinse the cloth with water between cleanings if it has any verm or crap on it from last time! let the jars sit for a while while ur waiting mix up a 10% bleach/water solution in a bathtub or big container. rinse the jars with water, then submerge them completely in the bleach water. let sit for 60-90 mintues. u might want to re-submerge every now and again coz plastic likes to float. then when they are done, rinse with regular water, mix up substrate, fill, and sterilise immediately! hope this helps. never failed for me!

oddest thing about that... had 4 jars, nothing grew, so threw out the cakes. Little crumbles of verm were stuck to the walls of the jars. Lids were replaced and just left there because of the great god Procrastination. Now those little flakes of verm are showing nice white grown on them! Thinking might transplant to see what happens!

If you have a dishwasher, that is all you really need to thoroughly clean jars (glass is best). The heat and detergent will get them cleaner than you can by hand. Run them through two rinse cycles to make sure the detergent's all washed away and then a hot drying cycle (don't open the washer during the cycle). As you remove the jars from the washer, have your substrate ready and then fill and pasteurize. Use clean dishes, utensils and hands, and contamintation will be rare. Also, it's not a given that "stronger" concentrations of disinfectant are better. With some, too high a concentration is actually less effective than the correct concentration. If you use these, follow the dilution instructions on the label for best results. hth

Actually wouldnt the whole sterilization process take care of any contams? Isnt that the reason we pressure cook the cakes before inoculating?
