To start off: my friend has experience in this area (see attachment). My question is regarding the damn contamination which is always hitting his crops. Sometimes cobweb mold, more often green mold. He prefers 50-50, and will be attempting 50-50 + soobn. The question is: do you guys (those with good results, look at the attachment) pasteurise, p.cook, microwave sterilise your casings??

The peat in the 50-50 is what you are really trying to sterilize. If you aren't somehow sterilizing the soil, this is why you're getting contams. Straight verm will work and you wouldn't have to mess with sterilization. Coco fiber is another alternative and my friend has seen good results from it, although it is hard to keep moist. Either way, if you're using any type of organic matter that might decompose, you're going to want to pastuerize or sterilize in one way or another.

I say always sterilize your casings until you don't ever get contam. Cubes benefit from bacteria, but they don't need it for massive fruiting. It's not worth the risk to merely pasteurize unless you got it down.

Dude, Throw away your 50-50 ideas. I've been thru that myself. I'm a strong proponent of verm-only too. It's the best way to go. I was simply amazed how much better, by yield, verm only was. Excellent 2nd and 3rd flushes, almost the equivalent to the 1st! Yes, it's true, my friend! Success IS possible with 50/50 and with 50/50+, but why spend the xtra $, go thru the sterilizing/pasteurizing, when you can just case right from the bag of verm. As long as one would sterize the water, the verm doesn't need it-in my opinion. Never had a problem. Live and learn and always, Good growin to ya! Bullfrog

ok thanks guys. My friend has gotten everything down to a science: Growing out birdseed in quarts Spawning manure With maybe 2% contam rate all the way until he cases; then up to 50%. In the past he used to only microwave sterilise his casing mixture with great results(contam didn't hit until about the 3rd flush)... But recently... Its just not cutting it. He's been reluctant to do verm only casings, because it didn't do much for him in the past. He's sick of spending all of this time and seeing everything contam'ing after he cases so he will try all of the methods you have suggested: verm only, pasteurization, and sterilization. One question.. should the pasteurisation temp be the same as manure? 160-170? one other thing is he has been lazy with the casings, never removing stick particles and junk from the peat. He will be sure to spend some time doing this now. Thanks for the help and if you have any other info feel free to respond please.
