mycelium contam and fruiting time
    #336732 -

hi :) i have two questions. i posted one already in the contam area, i hope this double doesnt bother people.

CONTAM QUESTION
1) i have removed the cakes from jars colonized and have choosen not to case as this is my first time. one of the cakes is covered with fully mycelium, which worries me because it seems to have more fluff then pins, unlike the other one. on this cake it seemed as if the white fluff had a blueish coloration. upon seeming this (and thinking it was just my eyes playing tricks) i really need to investagate as i was worried. i sterilized the blade of a knife with a lighter (the tip) and cut abit into the whiteish spot that was bluish :) hehe, anyhow, underneath was a blue/greenish bit of what seems like contam. it is actually underneath the mycelium growth on the top of the cake. hrm, is this bad or dangerous? i heard spores tint the cake blue, but since nothing has begun to fruit i doubt its spores. any information would be great

FRUITING QUESTION
how long does it take for case-less cakes to fruit? its my frist time, my cakes are all initating pins (i beleive), however brownish heads have not yet formed. the contaminated cake from question 1 has been in for about 7 days or so and is covered with more weird fluff then pins. also i am using a humidifier i picked up from this local second hand store dirt cheap.. and recomendations on settings? i mean, would it be stupid to keep the terranium in a misty-like fog? i have cut two holes in it to allow gas exchange--holes were cut in the bottom assuming that since the atomic weight of carbon dioxide is more htne the atomic weight of oxygen (o2), that co2 would go to the bottom generally. yes, i still fan once a day too.

sorry, more then two questions. thanks in advance

btw, i am using the mmgg tek basically, and am growing p. cubensis.. the tapalpa strain.

1) The blueing you speak of is normal and not a contamination.
2) Usually, when growing cakes, we wait for invitro pins to form. In the aquarium it can take a week or two before you see pins.
Yes, a misty fog is a bit too humid. With perlite humidification you can't go wrong.
Smart thinking, cutting your holes in the bottom. I'm going to reccomend you fan two or three times a day, this will help initiate pinning.
Lastly, they're not pins until you see the little brown caps. What you're seeing is most likely hyphal knots, a precursor to pins.
