Stir colonizing poo?
    #3360378 - 11/14/04 04:49 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i've got some mostly poop (a little verm and shredded cardboard but they both shrunk to pretty much nothing after getting wet ie. no airating qualities to the poop). its been a few weeks and there is very little visible progress of colonization. there are a few spots here and there on the top but that's all i can see. anyone see a reason why i shouldn't stir it up a bit with a clean fork or spatula or something?

I don't see why not, people use grains in their jars b/c the like to shake them up every now and then to speed up colonization, i say go for it but be careful, if it is colonized A lot then i woulnt recommend stirring it, b/c then ud bruise the tissue, anyone see it diffently?...hmmm..well.. gl and get more advice just in case, i don't want to lead you in the wrong direction! : )

if weeks passed and there is only some colonisation here and there it means that you have watered too much the substrate or you didnt water it at all or else you may have bacteria problems..

well, it is moist but not too wet, mostly i think it's because the poop is too compact...not alot of airation or paths for the myc to easily colonize...also i used brf cakes so they aren't as spread out through the poop as grains would be.

if it is what you say it is your problem, then you should add more vermiculite next time.
Also stop making brf cakes and make grain to spawn your poo. it's much better;-)

i learned that whole grain vs. brf thing and i've moved on to grain. WAY EASIER. i couldn't find straw this time or else i would have added it to the poo. i'm going to go ahead and 'stir it up' and see what happens

I have some poo that's been colonizing slowly in a homemade "mycobag."  I decided to sort of juggle the stuff inside around and then re-compact it.  Had verm and straw in mine, though, so, don't know.  I'd go for it if I were you, tho.  Nothing to lose.
