stalled growth
    #3336890 - 11/09/04 11:15 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

hello about 7 weeks ago i went shopping for rice flour but had no luck, i don't have a coffee grinder so i thought i would try 100% organic puffed brown rice as it would be easier for me to grind, any way i made cakes 25% flour 50% verm and 25% water, then i used fractual tek to sterilize, and injected spores.

about 7 days later a saw growth, and within about 2 weeks it was completely covered but it has gaps everywhere with like roots joining all the fluffy bits, i thought if i waited it would eventually cover but after about another 4 weeks it not changed much if any, i think they have run out of nutrients. i was just wondering if i could avoid binning them by maybe making a casing from them, i have new batch ready for spores tomorrow but if i can help the old ones i would like to try, nothing to lose. here is a pic from last week, they haven't changed much

thanks bri

Casing them is a bad idea. Uncolonized substrate + moisture and good growth conditions = contaminates.

I really don't know what to tell you to do with that. Maybe someone else has an idea?

if it's free of contams it should be ok to crumble and case. I always reccomend letting the fetus come to terms before birthing, but if you're making a casing you can get away with it. Just make sure there's no nasty smells when you open that fella.

I know that primarilly your issue here is a very compacted substrate, so much so it appears that your mycelium cant colonize it. Although I agree with zero about the contamination issue I would cut out the uncolonized part of the substrate completely with a heat sterilized knife cooled with rubbing alcohol. Crumble the fully colonized parts and case them per usuale. You have nothing to lose if you are pondering ditching the entire incubation. Just my two cents.
