in a casing, if thw whole mycelium network is caused to start pinning...won't some pins form on the bottom of the mycelium layer and grow down instead of up? This happens on cakes sometimes so surely a cased cake would also have the same problem.....

You need to use an opaque casing container, such as an aluminum cake pan. The pins will reach for the light source.

i use aluminum and yes sometimes youll get one on the bottom too. sometimes your pins will grow down or even wrap their way underneath the casing and grow there, making a telltale bulge. it doesnt happen everytime but with more and more flushes it can occur. this is also a good reason why you shouldnt flip your casings, otherwise your bottom will pin heavily and you may rot from the bottom.

if this does happen won't the pin rot and cause contams? How do you solve this.....or will it not rot in the time it takes to produce enough flushes?

one time someone here mentioned flipping the casing so i tried for myself. it didnt work :). the next casing i made i checked out of curiosity after the second flush (this one wasnt flipped) and there were 4 pins underneath one that had grown to about 2 inches and they were blue and about to rot so i picked them off. i dont know if this is common since i havent checked since but on my next pan of mold im going to look on bottom before tossing to see if this has any hand in rotting.
