Newbie Questions - Help Me Out! :)

Hi, I've been picking wild Psilocybin Cubensis for a few months now, but I'm getting sick of the long drive (even though I love being out in the country). Anyway, I've decided to give Shroom Wizards Grow Guide, (written by GGreatOne, I beleive) a shot. I have a few questions before I get started: 1) In the grow guide he says to make a spore print on an "index card". What is an index card, where can I get one and is there something else I can substitute it with? 2) Can I grow Blue Meanies using this method? Can I grow any mushrooms using this method, or only Cubensis? 3) Is it safe to swap spores via mail? I mean, if I made a spore-print could I safley mail it to someone in the USA (from AU)? By "safley" I mean "without getting into legal trouble". 4) Can you "breed" your mushrooms by repeatidly using the spores obtained from the biggest, most potent specimen, or doesn't mushroom "evolution" work like this? Thanx for any help. Everyone's gotta start somewhere.

I`ve heard the waxy paper you get with donuts works real good for prints...... and as far as i know spore prints do not contain any pscyo-actives until they germinate into mycelia.. there for they are legal.... hope this helps you out :o)

Dont use Shroom Wizards guide as it is crap. Pays little attention to detail, sterility, and 20 minutes boiling is not enough to kill anything. Use PF Tek at www.fanaticus.com

Avoid the Spore Trading Post like the plague, unless you want to pay $99.95 for some honey water and $85.00 for a Acadian syringe that he has magically renamed "Z Strain". Use Sporechicks or Hawks Eye for syringes and Sporeworks or Mush Mush for prints.

What's all this stuff about the "Spore Trading Post"? I didn't even mention them. I'll make my own spore prints with wild mushrooms.

I am a newbie too and have been doing major research. I have read just about every technique. I have decided on the PF but I also read the Simple Cubensis Growing Technique which answered a ton of questions that I had after reading the PF Tek. I would suggest giving it a read through. It also has the best illustrations out of every tek I have read

Hey there. I think you are going to be fine--I would agree with the above--for my first time i used a combination of pf and simple cub growers guide (growmushrooms.org). an index card is just a 3X5 or 5X7 office type card. you can use any sterile (or semi-sterile for that matter) paper. typing paper is ok. wax, etc.... can't tell you much about legality of spores. (they aren't legal in CA, but they are in the other 49 states, i believe.) i would also suggest picking up a copy of the mushroom cultivator (and the following book if you wish) by stamets. good stuff. this will help answer your breeding question. the short answer is basically yes, but it is of course, a bit more complicated than that. check through all of the teks online. you'll begin to be able to start to decide what is good information and what smells a bit off, and assimilate it all into a coherent mass for your own use. good luck.

Index cards are just note cards. They are thick paper that is all. You could substitute with anything form the paper on a manila envelope, tin foil, zip lock bag, wax paper, the paper on the back of a sticker/nametag, plastic slide, I've even seen ordinary white printing paper and notebook paper used to make prints.

Thanx guys. I really wanted to know what an index card was, but was afraid of my freshly picked shrooms going rotten before I got a reply. I've just used a bit of waxed baking paper and going on the above replies that will be A-OK. I've actually decided to stick to "Shroom Wizard's Guide" even though some have recommended against it. I want to see just how well it works and will post the results in a month or so so everyone will know. After looking at some of the others, the level of sterility they recommend is ridiculous, even for medical operating conditions. A doctor once told me that to steralize metal (for peircings etc.) all that is needed is a short exposure to open flame. Some of those guides (including the one I have chose, by coincidence) recommend burning something until it is "red hot". That's overkill. Not to mention some of the other ludicrous measures that are recommended. I don't mean by any means that I'm going to discount sterility! Quite the opposite, I'm going to use some hospital grade decontaminators and detergents for cleaning etc. Anyway, I'll try it out, maybe I'll be proven very wrong. Only one way to find out, I'll keep you posted. Thanx again.

In reply to:

Why? We'll see, either I'll be a dumbass in a month or two, or you will. I'm not going to disregard sterility, I thought I made that clear. I'm not going to burn things till they're red hot, though. I used to work in a hospital, both my parents work in the medical profession, I am very knowledgable about sterility and can get my hands on some good shit. I will take more pre-cautions than recommended in the guide. If I can be sterile enough to work in an open surgery environment, where someone's life is on the line, I can be sterile enough not to contaminate all the jars ('m no where near arrogant enough to assume 100% success!) If I do fail, it will be because who-ever wrote "Shroom Wizards Grow Guide" is a complete liar, and I'd prefer not to think that untill proven otherwise. I'm trying to be humble here, I am a newbie and I don't know what I'm doing, but burning things till they're red hot and spraying poisons around my house and other like stuff just is ridiculous. If you're really positive that it's a load of crap (which would imply that "Shroom Wizard" is a complete liar) then can you recommend another cheap & simple guide? I'm in the process of checking out the above listed sites. Thanx for those.

If you worked in a hospital, then you will know that one of the biggest problems in the operative and post-operative care is the contamination with bacteria. And this IS a sterility issue. Hospital cleaness is not enough for mushroom cultivation. The biggest and hardest to avoid problem is the air. 1 cubic foot contains from 1 million(1000000) to 100 milions particles. Spores, endospores, pollen, dustparticles with virii adhered to them. You are right if you say "untill glowing red" is a overkill. But this "glowing red" is only a indicator that the tool is really hot enough since it changes the color. Otherwise you can?t tell( well you could touch it, but this leaves scars, and then the scalpel is not sterile naymore) Really, I don?t wan?t that you fail, but there are methods that have been used for a while and have been proved to work. Shroom Witzzard?s tek isn?t among them. A good tek for a beginner would be the PF-Tek. A more detailed explanation of this tek can be found at www.growmushrooms.org . Later you can go into the subject of shakeable substrates like rye and birdseed and casing. Good luck.

I don't really know anything about the shroom wizard tek....but I do know this... Most people who pick wild mushrooms and intend on using them for cultivation use an agar tek so they can weed out any of the contaminates already present on the mushroom from the environment. I don't know if you intended on doing this or not. It would probably be better for you to order a syringe from a vendor that way you pretty much know they are sterile (of course there can always be human error but they take a lot of procedures to make sure they are sterile. Hey Gnome King I have to agree with these guys re. the Shroom Wizard's Grow Guide; I started out with this tek and wasted six weeks and two syringes before I moved on to the MMGG, and have had great success with all my cultures since then. I like Shroom Wizard and I think he means well, but his tek is not worth wasting your spores on. If you want to follow the SWGG then do so with the following modifications: 1) boil your jars for ONE HOUR, not twenty minutes, or you'll lose them to bacteria 2) DO NOT OPEN YOUR JARS to scrape spores into them. This is not sterile and will take longer to colonize the jar. Instead poke four holes and inject the inoculate down the side of the glass with a sterile syringe. 3) cover your substrate with 1/2" of dry vermiculite before sterilizing, as in the PF Tek. This is a great way to shield off any contaminants which might waft through your needle holes while you're inoculating. Hope this helps. Incidentally, I recommend rye flour and a PF syringe (Amazon strain), it's very robust and fast-growing as compared to the Gulf Coast strain I bought from Shroom Wizard.
