Newbie questions

I went around today trying to collect all the things I'll need for the Simple Cubensis grow guide at growmushrooms.org. Well I went OK - I found everything except canning jars! I found heaps of jars, but none that where tapered with special sealed lids. In fact, non that where tapered at all. I went to two hardware stores and three supermarkets and nothing. Are there any good substitutes? It says in the guide that the 'drug-store' (chemist?) sells them, so I'll try the chemist tomorrow.
Also, is 'unbleached' organic flour OK to use? In the guide it says 'organic brown flour' - I just figured it would be the same shit (unbleached = brown) true?
Thanx for any help.

First of all...if it says 'organic' on the packaging it will be fine.
None of the supermarkets in your area have canning jars? That is just strange as hell with it being canning season in most parts...did you make a point to ask someone that worked there to make sure? Also, I have found that the smaller the hardware store the more likely them carrying jars(Ace, Westlake types). If it comes down to desperation, do you have any Farmer's Markets around on the weekends(Amish goods sale)...they would know every f'n thing you ever wanted to know about canning but were afraid to ask..good luck!

'Canning season'??... Must be an American thing . It's apparantly not 'strange as hell' down here - every shop assistant I asked just looked at me blankly and asked, 'Canning jars?'. I had to explain to them that I needed a tappered jar with a special sealed lid. When they asked, 'what for?' I said it was for preserving jam. . I've never heard of an Amish Farmers market either. I don't think 'canning' stuff is a big deal here, unfortunatley.

That's interesting. I found some that looked really good - they where probably a tab under half a pint but where round a pretty flat with out-slopping edges - I think the word is 'tappered'. But they had plastic push on lids so I decided no to buy them because I wouldn't know how to strerilize them once they where full of substrate. How did you sterilize those? with a pressure cooker or something? The only thing I have available is to put them in boiling water. I guess that wouldn't hurt the plastic lids that much - the question would be how to keep them on and air-tight. Unless I can just stick it in the microwave to sterilize - can anyone tell me if that works please?

There is no lid with these glasses.
I put on 2 layers of foil.
! layer is crumped around the edge, then a second layer over the first, only put it over the top loosely(like on the pic)
Then sterilise in a covered pot in boiling water( don?t put in too much water, only to 1/3 of the glass) for 1.5 hours ot 45 minutes in a PC.
Let cool in the covered pot overnight.
Take off the upper layer of foil and inoculate through the second layer.
Cover with the foil again and incubate.
