GRAVITY
    #3323362 - 11/05/04 06:25 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Not sure if this is a spiitual or philosopical question, but here goes. Can anyone in just a few simple words explain how gravity works?
Cheers guys!

Probably not :smirk:

Gravity is a force, and all forces cause objects to experience accelerated motion. Just like two magnets pull eachother together, your body and the Earth pull eachother together. That's about as simple as I can put it, I think!

Mass attracts mass. In not-very-simple words mass distorts the fabric of spacetime. Imagine a rubber sheet being spacetime, and mass steel balls on the rubber sheet. The mass (steel balls) curves the spacetime (rubber sheet), causing mass to "roll" down the curves toward the other mass.

Except that in reality, spacetime is at least 4 dimensional.

No, Gravity and EM are two DISTINCT forces in our Universe.

We have FOUR forces which we call the "four fundamental forces" of nature. EVERY physical process we know of can be broken down into a process of one or more of these four forces. They are the Electromagnetic force, the Gravitational force, the Weak Nuclear force, and the Strong Nuclear force.

For a long time we have been "combining" forces that we once thought were distinct forces, but later realize are both parts of a single, "unified" force. Electricity and Magnetism is one example. For a long time we thought these were two entirely different forces, and thought they were COMPLETELY unrelated to Light. Yet it turns out that electricity and magnetism are both part of a single force, the Electro-magnetic force (which we perceive as Light). There is much talk nowadays of uniting the four known forces of nature into one SINGLE equation which could describe EVERY physical process in the Universe. This idea goes under a number of names, though most commonly could be refered to as "grand unification theory" (GUT). Einstein worked on this problem for most of the second half of his life, though was unable to combine the forces.

Today we have a single theory to describe the three non-gravity forces (Weak, Strong, and EM). Quantum mechanics is the name of the game, here. Unfortunately EVERY time we try to combine quantum theory with gravitational theory (General Relativity)...we end up with nonsense results. String theory is another form of GUT which has made some progress in uniting gravity with the other three forces.

Despite the almost constant failures, most physicists are certain that ALL the forces we observe are facets of one single Unified Force. We just haven't seen it yet :smirk:

Though you are correct on one thing: Gravity is a VERY weak force. In fact it is the weakest of all known forces.

Just think: with a small fridge magnet you can overcome the ENTIRE Earth's force of gravity!

blah blah blah Trendal.

Come on now, we should look at it from multidemensional point of view.

Take 9D model into consideration. Gravity is pure 1D Gaia.

Have you ever FELT gravity while tripping, have you ever tried to get uner the skin of gravity? On shrooms or Salvia.

The best way to get to know gravity is to do just that.

When you relax you body, every part of you body and let gravity take its course, interesting things happen...

Ok, I have only one statement: prove it.

Because physics can

could you prove that physics prove it?

""Have you ever FELT gravity while tripping""
interesting, I could say amongst other things that i feel the body is gravity when 'I' is is in a dream or the dream whatever

if you take a bucket , fill it whit water, turn it upside down, the water could pour out, but if you swing it round and round, the water stay in the bottom of the bucket, even when 'up side down' is that gravity "at work"?

That is accelerated motion at work, which is essentially indestinguishable from "true" Gravity. This is the essence of Einstein's Relativity.

Ie: If you shoot off in a spaceship that has no windows in it, accelerating at a constant 9.8 m/s^2, there is no way you can tell if you are actually out in space accelerating, or still sitting on the launch pad experiencing the Earth's gravity. Acceleration = Gravity, essentially.

I could prove it, yes, but it would take more time than I have right now. There are MANY books and websites around on the subject of physics...just go read one of those that talks about gravity.

and trendal not that I'm assuming neither, but, if you can prove it, then that is ok, but i ask, can you prove that you prove it? I'm crazy you know? :P

Hehe, quite alright...I can be a bit loony myself

I can not conclusively "Proove" anything to anyone unless they are willing to accept the proof. Unfortunalye, in my experience, far too many people just don't accept valid scientific evidence. I can't argue with those kind of people, because they just don't want to listen to logic.

And no, I'm DEIFINITELY not saying you're one of those people...just pointing out the trouble with trying to proove things to someone else.

I really prefer to just offer the evidence or point someone in the right direction. From there it's entirely up to them if they even want to READ the evidence, let alone accept it as valid. Also, there's a GOOD reason why we use the word "theory" so often in science

It's totally wrong to accept notions as finally and completely true simply because science says so.  Isn't this the same mistake Christians made with the Bible?  Muslims with the Qu'ran?  We say "Yes, but it's because the Bible and the Qu'ran are very two very unscientific pieces of literature." :shake:

Science might have a lot to tell us about the mechanics of things, but as a reflection of reality science is an extremely distorted mirror.  There's no reason to lend it favour over other schools of thought driven by the same pursuit of knowledge.

Ped I don't think you read my all my posts, since I certainly didn't say I hold ANYTHING as "completely true". In fact I specifically stated that I hold theories and not beliefs, and have said so many many times in the past

This sentence equates science with some kind of objective, unquestionable truth.

I don't think it equates that...but I can see now how you could interpret it that way.

My point was that science generally involves results which can be reproduced through experimentation, which to me is a MUCH more valid "proof" than something which cannot be tested or reproduced. I've met people who seem to scoff at this, though, and it usually appears to be the case that they just plain don't understand the evidence presented.

Reproduction of results = key in ANY kind of "proof".
