Grape nuts
    #331841 - 06/01/01 06:00 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone here has tried using grape-nuts cereal as a substrate, or any other more common foods. If nobody has, it would be cool to hear some speculation as i may experiment with that a litte.

Hehe, last night I was looking around the house for possible substrates or supplies and came across the grape nuts. I was also considering trying and experimenting but didnt want to waste my time. So I too would like to know because this may work. Chex (wheat) is suppose to work.

Spores don't germinate very well on preservatives

earlyriser:  Usually all your commercial cereals contain preservatives to give them a longer shelf life.  Preservatives prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria, so mushroom mycelium is not likely to grow well if at all on a commercial cereal.
Jared:  I've heard that some people (Una) add oatmeal to Azure wood substrate to help with the growth of the mycelium.  I assume adding small amounts to any substrate would be ok, as long as the substrate was still properly aerated.

I was under the impression that colonization was entirely possible using puffed oats. Perhaps I had misread somewhere along the line.
