How easy is it for an American to move to Canada? Working and living there for the rest of your life?

I am moving to Tofino. W/C of BC. There's good waves and buds with some of the best snowboarding nearby, pretty much a less crowded version of Nor Cal.

I honestly do get the feeling that quite a few people are going to light out for foriegn and less hostile territories because of this election. I know a lot of my peeps are. (Brother's going to Switzerland, I know three different girls all moving to Europe, I'm outta here, my best friend since High School is moving to the Phillipenes, another good friend to Korea)

Anyways.

They're both awesome cities, I'm sure. Toronto certainly is, and I've heard great things about Vancouver (except, I hear, cost of living is higher there). Granted, Toronto isn't the cheapest place to live in Canada, either. :smirk:

who cares. I managed to live most of my life poor, in one of the richest parts of the US. I'm sure I'd be fine in a rich part of canoodia. How easy/hard is it to move there and get a job?

I like rural areas and plan on moving toward the outskirts of Calgary or Vancouver by the end of March 2005. Privacy is a major factor in where I live. I enjoy being able to be alone and left to my business, but I also enjoy the night life of a city and the amount of people that live in the city.

In another thread there was a link to a site that allows you to take the Canadian citizenship test to see how likely it is that you will fit into one or more of the categories. I made it in skilled worker by 1 point because I chose that I had pre-arranged work and plan on trying to arrange a job before I move as I'll only have around $5000 USD cash to move on.

Thanks Trendal, I appreciate the info. I have no problem with working full-time and would like to open a business if/when I reach full canadian citizenship.

Do you know if there are time restrictions on how long you must live there before you're considered a full fledged citizen?

$300 a month isn't bad at all since around here it's generally $400 a month for a one bedroom apartment, $600 for a decent one, and $900 for one I like.

I'm not sure what anyone's situation is etc, but I would be willing to bunk up with other Shroomerites if anyone wants to meet up and get to know each other a little bit before hand. Like I said, my target is the end of March after I collect my tax return and bonus from work plus the three weeks of vacation pay I will get.

I'm just wondering if Canada is going to restrict a lot of us from entering into their country to live since it seems that a lot of people are planning on leaving this country and they are the closest for all of us up north.

Both are illegal but not as readily enforced as it is in America.

I believe when I asked this before I was told that police will only usually take action if they see you standing there selling or smoking pot in open sight.

Also with the new proposition of the marijuana laws it could be that 15 grams and less is applicable for a $400 fine and no criminal record.

I'm unsure about shrooms.

I too am broke and in chicago, I'm more worried about staying fed and having a roof over my head while I look for a job, cause I got no savings.

Can you imagine? No more US media saturation? No more feeling like a minority cause you're not a religious zealout who lives in the rural south?

I'm considering Vancouver too cause its clean, the weather is tolerable, and of course, the whole pragmatic drug policy thing, but the cost of living is a concern for me.

I've never traveled abroad though, let alone moved.

Anybody here moved to canada from another country? Help us out! How much money do you think it would take to make the move smoothly? Like closer to 500 or 5000? How would you suggest a newcomer going about seeking a job and meeting new people. Did you get a lot of culture shock?

BTW, the unemployment rate is about 5.8%, as of like september or something. About the same as here.
