 Good bittorrent walk-thru fer n00bs?

So I have the bittorrent software downloaded, and I tried to download a couple of things, but they were going very slowly. I also noticed that while the download rate started slowly, then increased a bit, there was also an upload box and I was actually uploading more than I was downloading.  I have heard that I need to setup the ports on my computers to optimize this, and to help share files with others?
I'm sorry if this is a really gay question. I'm just really new to this sort of thing and it's not obvious to me what I should do. Any help would really be appreciated, pubbers!

you should have peerguardian (get it only from methlabs.org) if your doing any p2p.
what client are you running? you need to have ports 6881-6890 open

Yeah, I've got protowall running right now. I don't understand what ports do, which ports communicate what information, and where I can adjust said ports' orientation. I mean, I'm purty newb at this.  Thanks!

client = the actual bittorent application you use
router = hardware network device that handles transfer from different computers (i.e. linksys, d-link)
whats your setup man?

the riaa/mpaa loves getting serious in their relationship with you by sending love letters expressing hate and them informing you that you could owe them huge amounts of money. it's not all that unheard of for the riaa/mpaa to contact your ISP directly and have your upload/download capped or even terminated.
basically, if you torrent.. be careful. isohunt.com isn't the best place to go, remember it's illegal. peerguardian ftw at all times too. i recommend not torrenting anyhow, it's better to find a nice community that shares files privately. that's my bt torrent for a n00b, don't use it. it's too easily tracked
