Who knows about car audio?
    #314564 - 05/11/01 07:21 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Hello

I started to save money cause i want to hook up my car in a few months. My friend recently bought two 10" JL Adio subwoofers for his altima. That shit is loud and sounds really good. I have a new fourrunner and i was thinkin of maybe putting in two 15" or maybe three 10" subwoofers. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? does anyone know any good sites to buy equipment from?

thanks.

peace

Do you spend a lot of time in your car? Does your car stereo play .mp3 files?

I don't like listening to tunes in the auto. On longer trips audiobooks are cool.

i wouldn't put 15's in there unless all you listen to is rap and you don't care about tight bass.
3 10's will kick some serious ass - you'll probably need a pretty good amp for it. make sure you have good speakers too, no one likes to only hear the bass. i think it's definately worth having a system in your car. i will never own a car without a sub in it again.

head over to crutchfield.com for help and equipment.

thanks for the info man.
also, im not sure if this is true, but is it the bigger the subnwoofer the deeper the bass? so you think three 10" would be better than two 15"? And yes, i pretty much listen to rap and aslo some house and trance music. I wanted to spend about a grand, and i heard JL audio were the best.
well, thats it fr now.

2 15"'s might be a lil deeper then 3 10"'s, but 3 10"s will give the bass a "bolder/fuller" feel then 2 15"s.

It all depends on how much money you want to spend. I would recomend two 12" Infinity perfect subs ($150 each on ebay) and a JBL 1200.1 amp ($380). That would hit really hard and still sound great. If you get JL Audio subs get the w6's, they are very nice also. With 10's you wont get that really low bass that rattles the hell out of your car, and 15" subs do sound sloppy.

There are two differnet kinds of subs, SQ(sound quality) subs which sound great but dont hit that hard. And SPL (sound pressure level) subs that hit very hard but won't sound as nice. If you want SQ subs go for Image Dynamics IDQ's and if you are looking for all out SPL go with Cerwin Vega strokers. The infinity perfects are about 50/50 SQ/SPL and are great subs for the money.

cool, thanks for all the info man.
I heard that JL Audio has the best subs. I was looking to spend about a grand. What do you think would sound best in a 4runner?

JL Audio definetely doesn't make the best subs, but they are nice. The most a 12" JL w6 costs is about $200, some subs are $1000 each.

Tell me what your more iterested in, sound quality or SPL? Basically do you want a system that hits extremely hard or a system that sound really nice. Just give me a figure like 60/40 SQ/SPL and I will figure out a really nice system for you. I work in a car audio store and actually enjoy this kind of stuff. Is that $1000 all for subs and amps or are your speakers and your head unit still stock? If they are you will definetely want to switch those out too.

cool thanks again man.
im really interested in quality. Nice deep bass would also be good too. Im not really sure what you mean when you said
"Just give me a figure like 60/40 SQ/SPL and I will figure out a really nice system for you." I wanted to spend the grand on just the subs and the amp. the speakers are still stock and the head unit is too. I wanted to leave them alone for now. also, the 4runner is leased. will i even be allowed to add stuff to it being that well have to give it back? Damn, i guess i should have asked that first, heh.
well thanks agin.

peace

If I had a leased 4-runner I would use the factory speaker locations and build a removable amp rack and sub box. Never cut a leased car. Also, to an extent the larger the sub doesn't mean the lower the bass. I've heard a single 8" go to 35hrtz some 15's can't do that also larger doesn't mean louder either. Buying 1 very good sub is better than multiple subs and takes up less space.

Yes, tell them it's leased and you don't want any cutting or holes , they should give you enough choices to make your head spin...

hey jeelix, i was wondering what you recommend for a honda crx (hatchback). i already have a head unit, and replaced speakers. this would be a different car - which is why i'm asking.

my old car was a 4 door sedan style. i had 1 kenwood 10" bass tube amped at 250x1 (profile). but i'm looking into getting a bigger system anyway. i'm thinking i'll probably get another 10" bass tube and maybe a new amp - don't really know much about amps, but it would be just for the 2 bass tubes... maybe a 200x2 or something along that line?

also, i'll probably hook up my old amp to all my speakers (which would be 4 6-1/2s. by your sq/spl thing i'm thinking you mean quality vs. loudness/hitting? if that's what you mean i'd say about 80sq/20spl.

i listen to a lot of trance music and also just a lot of everything, and i definately want 10". the money factor i would say is probably around $300-$500 or so just on a sub and amp. any thoughts?

The 60/40 he is talking about is do you want like 60%loud volume and 40% good sound ect. I can't really recommend anything, I've had my system almost 10 years , I'm not up on all the new stuff, plus I don't know what you want from your system. I can tell you, bass gets old and going deaf isn't too cool either.
My system is a Denon reciever, (2 )MC300 and (1) MC500 soundstream amps, (2)SS12 subs and 12 MBquart speakers.

I like the bang that 12's give. When looking around for subs look for the watts in RMS not Peak. RMS is the continous flow of power the subs use, the higher the RMS the more power the sub actually uses.

For instance the JBL GT series RMS power is from 18- 300 watts and 1,200 peak. 150.00

While a Rockford Fosgate Power HX2 12" delivers 150-1000 RMS and 2,000 Peak. for about 400.00

Of course you pay for what you get, the HX2 has a 18 3/4 pound magnet driving it while a JBL has one less than 6 pounds, the sound is very different.

If you had $1,000.00 to throw away you could get the RFL152 SPL which weighs 56 pounds and has a 2,000 RMS and Peak 4,000. and 92 dB, with a freq range of 20-150 hz
. If you have two of these babies your car would rattle till it disassembles it self piece by piece and shatter all windows at the first hit.

One thing pretty much remains the same, more watts = more bass. Also dont forget to get a capacitator to get the most out of your amp and subs for like $150.00
