Question about incubator?!?!

I afoaf made an incubator like magash but tied the handles down with rope and used pint size jars from keeping the aquarium heater from being crushed by the second rubbermaid container. 50 watt heater. No air bubbler though. So this friend set the temp at 85 F. I'm wondering though, just b/c the water is 85 F, the heat would decrease a few degrees b/c it has to transfer through the plastic of the second container. Do you get me? It would probably make more sense to use a metal container for the one that sits in water. That way heat could transfer more easily to the inside where the jars would be. He's going to buy a thermonitor from the $1 store and put it in with the jars to get a accurate temp. So I guess what I'm asking is, should he turn the water heater up to 90 F or so to compensate the temp. decrease from the heat being transfered through the plastic of the second rubbermaid container or what?!?

Actually oddly enough my TnT is set to about 78ish, but the temp is about 85. Only way i can think of is that the one tub tends to hold heat.
Really tough to tell without a thermometer.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing as kraj. My heater temp. guage is set to around 82F, but the thermometer inside the incubator reads between 84-85F.

I have a 200 watt heater set at 86 and my temp reads at 85. I thought the same thing, that I would have to set the heater a little higher so the heat could transfer through the second tub, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

it has to do with what your heater is designed for. Of course, if you have a heater designed to heat a 3-5 gallon tank heating 1 gallon at the bottom of a rubbermade, the temp will be alot higher.

Well a 50 watt heater is enough for 5-15 gallons of water. That's more water than needed for a homemade incubator.
