Casing but only picking one...

Say you have a casing. There are like 50 mushrooms... but about 10 are far ahead of the other 40 mushies, and they're ready to be picked. Can you pick the 10 and wait a couple days for the other 40? I know I could technically wait to pick the 10 if this were to happen, but can I do it the way I specified or would it lead to problems? Thanks guys!

I run into this problem a lot. If you pick the guys that are done you run the risk of damaging knots and pins, I have destroyed quite a few pins in my day by being impatient and not waiting for it all to grow out.

If there are no knots or pins around a mature shroom I say pick it, if there are I would just leave it be. You can leave a matured shroom for quite awhile, just watch the caps and make sure they don't go black.

what about when a shroom drops spores in the fruiting chamber? that is bad? that is usually what happens to me soon after the veil tears away from the stem.

no big deal ... Makes it hard to spot contams.. And you have to clean up the spores...

if your really worried you could cut them near the base as possible without hurting whats around it and clean up after the others mature

you can just pick those 10, but be very careful. this is why an even casing layer is so important. I just tried patching and have a beautiful even casing layer now, should have a pinset early next week. I'm getting anxious as this is my first casing.

just cut the caps and take some prints! it's not gonna kill anything, it'll just keep those mushrooms from growing. they're not going to rot in the days it takes for the rest of the casing you have, it'll be fine.

Black cap means its aborted..or spores dropped on it. Usually looks more purplish then. I wait until the full flush matures generally. Shrooms once the veil tears will be fine for up to 3 days after..the cap just keeps turning up. I wouldn't leave them past that but 3 days should be more then enough to let any late bloomers catch up.
