Legalization of Marijuana: Closer than we think???
    #3269350 - 10/23/04 11:00 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

After puffin on some herbage, I got to thinking: Is the legalization closer than we think?

--- It is appearing more and more in popular music and movies. Does this mean our society is accepting it more than it was, ohhh, 10 years ago?

--- Just today when I was filling out my ballot, I was reading measure 33 (Oregon), which would put medical marijuana in pharmacies and allow a liscenced caregiver (person OR comapny) to buy, manufacture, and sell marijuana to patients under the act. It ALSO makes medical marijuana easier for people to obtain.

With the articles, and comments about this act I have read, it seems that most/more of the population is FOR it!

--- More states are accepting medical marijuana. I think vermot recently became state #9

--- More and more states are reducing the penalty for posession. In chicago, people with under a oz or so, are are given a citation and a small, payable fine.

I may just be a wishful thinker. What are your thoughts on this?

People thought it was imminent in the 60's too, but instead they ended up with Richard Nixon.

Not gonna happen, man.
It's so far off either major party's agenda...

I think what you're seeing is just more indifference towards it. But I don't think there's a strong legalization movement out there. Maybe it'll slowly happen. 30 or 40 years down the road.

Well you know you read something like Shroomism's recent ordeal and the prospect of legalization being near doesn't seem so close. On the other hand Canada and the UK are gradually decriminalizing so that's optimistic. Medical Marijuana may be like what the conservatives consider to be the final thing they'll accept in order to soothe people's legalization stress but having no intention of conceding to anything else.
I don't feel like it affects me that much to be honest, beside obtaining it. I mean to me it's like alcohol, sure you can get drunk and stumble around in public but it's usually an asshole type thing to do.

Yeah, I have ONLY been waiting for 35 years now. I will be on my death bed all gnarled in agony and gasping my last few breaths when a hot, young nurse will come in puffing on a jay.

Swami: "What's that smell?" I croak in an almost inaudible whisper.

Nurse: "Oh? Didn't you hear, Mr. Swami? Mariajuana is now legal. Here, have a puff."

Swami: *reaches for doobie, grabs heart and enters the white light*

impossible..for the mere reason that prohibition is a pure power trip...and if local law enforcement appears more indifferent at the moment..then its strictly because of budget constraints...the feds..OTOH..can ring up all the deficits they want to..and appear set to increase mandatory sentancing (HR-4547)...

It will most likely happen with a landmark court case and going all the way to supreme court.

Well I live in chicago, and its not people with less than an oz, its people with less than 2 grams, give or take. However Mayor Daley, or so I hear, is in support of raising that level to around an oz.

The reason being that cook county court systems are so bogged down with petty marijuana posession cases that its not only slowing down our legal system, but wasting a lot of money. This way, a cop sees you smoking a joint, he gives you a ticket. You pay the ticket, end of story. They still make money off you smoking pot, but without the further cost of court fees etc.

Pretty progressive right?

However chicago is a pretty liberal city, and I'd be pretty surprised to see that happen on a nation-wide basis.

Doesn't sound progressive to me. So basically if you get caught smoking a joint they force you to pay them money? I almost prefer to see them put people in jail and lose money. At least that way the truth of their laws becomes evident.

This is why reform is the enemy of revolution. They make consessions to the right side and to the wrong side, so both sides become complacent. Then people are less likely to listen to the right side when they continue to bitch about how unfair the laws are. In some ways, I think the decriminalization here in California will delay any legalization efforts.

Here is California if you can get a doctor to write you a prescription, you can drive on over to SF and buy it.  There are registration fees' and such for the clubs that sell it  :spliff:

Well they used to take you to jail. They do the same here in Stanuslaus County, CA - if its under an Oz they fine you 295$.
