I agree bigger is better when it comes to tank heaters. 50w isn't that much... if you have lots of cold water, it'll take awhile. If the temp is the same after a day, time to return the heater for a new one. Good luck.

How cold is it exactly? The water should feel cool to the touch, it's not as warm as your body temp. Get a second tub in there and a thermometer. Thats where the temp matters. My water temp is set for only about 76. The tub holds in heat so well though that puts the tub at 83-84. Many people only use 50watt heaters..if cranked up all the way I would imagine it would be able to get a tub in it up to 86 without a problem.

If theres no difference then the heater isn't working. 50 watts should be plenty for the amount of water to go in a tub that size. Your only using a few gallons and 50 watt heaters are made for fish tank that hold twice that amount of water.

Don't buy a 200W heater. A 50W heater is fine. It says on the package that it might require 12-24 hours to achieve the desired temperature. Next time just use warm water to start with and it'll reach the desired temp. in an hour or two. Good luck.

Definitely! Also IME 50watt is not big enough it has to work way too hard especially in the winter! Spend the extra $3 and get a 250watt it's well worth it especially to your babies ViaAqua VA250G Heater 250 Watt WTF? $14.95 Just do it! Although you aren't heating all that much water it's still only $3 and ya never know you may expand your OP?

my 50w heater has a dial that pulls off. if you take the dial off and replace it back aways you can set the heat above stock settings getting the temp up to desired setting. it's a tetra fish tank heater from wallyworld.

My buddy is using a tetra whisper 5-15. Its turned down to about 1/8 more then the lowest setting and it keeps the tnt at a steady 86 fine. Its also a 50 watt heater.
The tubs arent huge, about 20 gallon apeice, old roughneck ones with no insulation added. They tnt is in a closet that maintains a steady 78 degrees.
I dont understand why you guys are having to turn yours up so much.
Also he is using a 15 watt pump to circulate the water 30 min on 30 min off. That helped alot with temp stabilization from top to bottom.

That TnT in your closet is set for fruiting how come? It's called if ya have it use it, in otherwards incubate at optimal temps and fruit at optimal temps and you'll be golden long before everyone else. Your buddies TnT is at 86F.? and at 78F.? I think slightly larger heater would be a smart move Hamurabi just think of it as cheap insurance, Ya never know what may happen. You may move and fine your OP in a colder than you'd like basement or bedroom and you'll still have the proper tool I mean a couple bucks is extremely cheap as far as an upgrade! Anyway GL guys

yeah a big heater would be a smarter move.
My buddy could only afford the $14 one, hes poor. And hes moving the tnt out of the closet when his first wave of jars are colinized which is about a day away
I think hes going for mini straw casings.

You don't need air pumps in the incubator. Actually, this will work against keeping it warm. Think about it. You are introducing 2-3 times air volume with new cold air every hour. That means the heater has to warm up not 1 tub volume in 24 hours, but 48-72 tub volumes in 24 hour period. No wonder it's having a problem. Take the pumps out. It's only hurting your babies.

All electronic heaters have a thermostat that adjusts and sets itself according to the initial temperature that it is placed in for the first 15 minutes that it was plugged in/ So if you place it in a cold body of water, then it will not function properly.

is that tub completely filled? 50w sould make SOME difference even if it was, if the thing is working properly it should be fine though... But a 100 or 200w heater is not much more expensive anyway.
