Baking soda/powder
    #3217019 - 10/05/04 03:35 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Anybody ever try mixing baking soda or powder into their substrate? I am wondering what it would do, or if it could possibly help with anything.

Just for kicks I tryed this just now, but it wasnt with baking powder. Was with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. There was a strange chemicle reaction, the substrate almost disintegrated! started fizzing and got real airy.

Im not sure what would happen if it was just baking soda or powder, but maybe sombody can get somthing good from it.

Please, post any opinions!

I would think the sodium would damage, even possibly kill the mycelium. Probably better to stick with calcium buffers. Lime, oyster shells, etc. I have been using powdered egg shells with good results.

It also forms sodium acetate (a salt) and the CO2 that is dissolved in water forms carbonic acid.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I don't know why you would want to try to adjust the pH of a cake because thats all baking soda would really do....

Death wouldnt happen, it wouldnt make a substrate at all and you wouldnt get past the reaction of mixing them together which wouldnt cause you any harm.

Not that I disagree with you about the not joking about the stuff
