Egg shells in casing mix
    #3120012 - 09/10/04 09:40 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I've looked and can find no mention of crushed or powdered egg shells being used in any casing layer or substrate. Aren't egg shells just calcium? Do you think they could be used as a ph buffer in casing soil as an alternative to oyster shells or lime, or maybe just as an additive to a substrate to provide a little extra nutrition?

yeah, that can work out okay i hear (from the shroomery). can't verify that by actual experience though - get oyster grit from the petshop's bird section if you really want a buffer.

you only need a buffer if your casing layer is likely to be too acidic, from using peat, for example. mycelium itself makes acidic byproducts, too, but these aren't a concern so long as it starts off in the pH range 7-9, they say.

egg shells can work but cleaning the membrane from the shell can be a pain

Wonders if hard boiling the eggs first makes for easier membrane removal.

Save your shells, crush em up good. Boil em for a few. Strain and let dry.

boiling does help but its still a pain, Kitteh may be onto something with the boiling of the egg shells after peeling the eggs

I remember I asked that here before, and the consensus was no. I don't remember why, but I remember that it was no. You can do a search if you want with my name.

it really is easier to find hydrated lime, a 2 lb bag cost me $3 and the only work involved was reaching into my pocket

Powderized eggshell works very well as a long term buffer. I just rinse them under running water rubbing the membrane off with my thumb then let them dry throughly, then powderize in my coffee grinder. This stuff goes along way also, I use 1tsp. per qt. of casing mix.
