overcooked wbs ok?
    #3215514 -

My buddy told me he overcooked his wbs and about 80% of it exploded. However he went ahead a made about 23 quart jars all pc'ed n everything.

Is the overcooked wbs going to affect anything besides maybe slower colonization? He said the moisture looked ok in the jars, no puddles and no excessive condensation.

6 of the jars have already been knocked up with spores but hes waiting on three honey jars to knock up all the other jars.

Would it make enough of the difference for him to remake those 15 other jars???

thanks in advance

They will still work well. Think cracked corn...

Is it being used as spawn or substrate?

Toss them and start over. You will have a hard time shaking them up.

I just tossed 6 quart jars of overcooked WBS. They didn't take at all.

When I initially prepped the jars, they looked fine. They looked well-saturated with H2O, but no pooling at the bottom. I thought, "hey -- this looks great!"

However, the mycelium has a hard time establishing a healthy network if there's too much water content. It's hard to judge this just by looking. However, with all my jars, the grain did not shake 100% well and tended to clump a bit. I think this is a big sign. Also, the mycelium tended to colonize the top 1/4 of the WBS then completely stall. WTF, I was wondering!? Well, too much water in the lower part of the jar.

I know next time I will definitely not cook as long as I did -- in fact, I will probably lean towards a less-hydrated WBS.

In your buddy's case -- well, I wish him 100% success, but from my personal experience, it could be a lost cause. Tell him to cross his fingers. It would be a shame to lose all that hard work! He's got nothing left to lose now but just wait and see.
