can't I just use a lighter?? I don't think it's necessary to buy an alcohol lamp just for this if you can heat it with a lighter, at that temperature it's not like there'll be contaminants on it anyways..

No. I only used an alcohol wipe, no flame at all.. and all 12 of my jars are doing great.
But maybe I'm just playing with fire.. so to speak.. lol.. since this is my first time.
I do have an alcohol lamp, perhaps I should employ it's use next time.

Try out this:
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/25954
No need to buy one when you can make one with a left over jar, cotton ball and alcohol that you should already have for cleaning anyways.
Free lamp and it is much cleaner burning. You can leave scortch marks with a lighter at times if you use the wrong one.
For the best alcohol you can get a big can of the good stuff at home depot, wally world, etc. Comes in a blue tin in the area that they sell paint thinners, mineral spirts and such. And for even better rusult than that store the tin in your freezer to keep it dry.

I'd be willing to bet that most people use isopropyl alcohol(rubbing) for sterilization.. It's more difficult to find denatured ethanol.

Turn a shot glass upside down and pour a little alcohol on the bottom side of the glass. Light it up and it'll burn long enough to sterilize your syringe.
That idea i got from one of the many teks on the site. Just thought I'd share something I learned.
later.

I guess that must depend on region then. It is all over the place here. I guess that explains why we have a meth lab blow up every week or two in my city.

Well, you can certainly find ethanol at just about any hardware store in the states, but you can get rubbing alcohol at any supermarket.. I guess "easy" is realitive.

Probably.
And we still wonder why they restrict use of certain chemicals by the general public...because usually the general public is retarded.

I just made the homemade lamp in about 5 minutes. Jelly canning jar, isopropyl and an old white cotton undershirt. Cut the shirt, rolled it up and stuck it in. Works great. Gloom, I suggest you do so, as well.
