What liquid for Alcohol Lamp?

Hi,
I just bought an alcohol lamp and was wondering what type of fluid to use in it. I bought some tiki torch fluid , but that stuff emits a bunch of smoke...( is that normal? ) . Just wondeirng what type of fluid other ppl out there use. Thanks =)

Yep, plain ole' rubbing alcohol works fine. I like the green kind cause it looks cool:)

you want isopropyl alcohol. Foud in any pharmacy section of any store usually. Rated around 93% to 96% alcohol.

Isopropanol is not ideal since the fumes can sting the eyes. If you do want to use "rubbing" alcohol, get over 70% or it won't burn very well.

Go to the paint supply section of any Walmart type store and look for ethanol in the thinner and solvent area. You know its the right stuff when it says it can be used as a fuel on the can.

Yeah, I tried normal pharmacy 70% isopropanol and it just didn't burn well.

So in a pinch I created a lamp out of a zippo and silly putty. Besides the smell, that works pretty well.

**oh, and the carbon deposits if you flame too long

rubbing alcohol (high percentages (97%)) works fine. denatured alcohol is a good choice too--burns quite clean. you'll find it in the hardward store paint section.
