Diploid's Home-made Alcohol Lamp * 1
    #1435871 - 04/07/03 11:00 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Cheap, easy, and effective alcohol lamp for sterilizing needles, scalpels, and other instruments.

1. Buy Baby food.  Banana is my favorite, but other flavors should work as well.  Get this at the supermarket.

2. Buy Some Alcohol.  You can get this at a hardware store or drug store. Ethyl or methyl alcohol is best. Avoid isopropyl alcohol. It's vapor pressure is high and will tend to spill out of the jar when it gets warm. Also keep a fire extinguisher nearby whenever you work with an open flame.

3. Buy 3/8" spade drill bit.  Get this at the hardware store too.

4. Buy some cotton balls.  You can get these at any drug store.  Don't use polyfill; it will melt.  Use cotton only!

5. Open the jar of baby food and eat it.  Yum!  Rinse and dry the jar, then drill a 3/8" hole in the lid. Use a small nail to poke a second hole near the rim to equalize pressure.

6. Squeeze a cotton ball and stick it part-way through the hole in the lid.  This will serve as the wick.

7. Stick a few cotton balls in the jar.  Fill the jar about half-way with alcohol. Don't overfill it. Half way is plenty.

8. Put the lid on the jar with the wick sticking out of the top.  Put a few drops of alcohol on the top of the wick to get it primed.

9. Make sure you wipe up any spilled alcohol from your working surface and from the sides and lid of the jar, then light the wick.  You'll get a clean, hot flame far better than anything you can get out of a lighter.

To extinguish, cover the whole thing with a glass.  The flame will consume all the oxygen in a couple of seconds, then it will go out.

Edit: some have suggested a modification to improve the design. Poke a second small hole in the lid away from the hole for the wick to equalize the pressure.

excellent! a great start for the newbs and the po. maybe try fixing some plate or something to the bottom to prevent tipping. myalcohol lamp is a multi-corner polygon of sorts so that it doesn't knock over and can be used sitting at an angle. only cost like 5 bux too. but DIY si always a good thing imo.

fantastic post.

I was just thinking to myself the other
day just how fantastic my lamp is.

they are an indispensible tool.

MacGyver would be so proud of you!

I bet you could buy wick from Michaels or
other large art/craft stores. they sell lamps
and fuel for lamps.

maybe a thick guage cotton rope...or how
about an old sock?

also, a shot glass would make a great cap to
put out the lamp as well, if you're really crafty,
you can get a thimble and use that as well.

use the one in your monopoly set!

I've been doing the same thing, only a lil less complicated. I just get a shot glass, soak a kleenex in it and pour some rubbing alcohol, works the same way, a lil less work.

If you don't want to build one yourself & there is a bar or resturant supply place in your town. You can get a refillable table top wick fuel cell for very cheap & just fill w/alc. Works great. 6T

LOL, forget ghetto rigging stuff involving fire, that's just crazy. Nobody can really be THAT cheap, can they?

http://www.cynmar.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=12030895

It's $3.40 for Christ's sakes.

If you want a nicer one then spend $10.00 and get a wickless alcohol burner.

Yeah, but it was recently linked to. Just trying to save someone from burning their house down and getting busted in the same swipe.

I'm really all for making your own homemade stuff, but when you consider how cheap it is to go with safer premade stuff I feel like I have to give people the advice. If you buy babyfood and a drill bit you've already spent more than a premade lamp.

The thing with Cynmar is that there's a $25 minimum order, which I learned when I ordered stir bars from them. If I could find a local shop that had a real alcohol burner I'd buy one, but to order online and add shipping costs onto that, I might as well keep using a regular old lighter.

I prefer a bunsen burner myself, but each to their own. It really shouldn't be that hard to come up with the $25 minimum order. They stock all kinds of items useful to the hobby. Petri dishes, inoculating loops, various glass containers, filters, syringes, etc..

OMG this thread is ancient.

FF, some of us like to tinker, and besides, there's nothing particularly dangerous about this alcohol lamp rig. I've been making them since I was 10.

And yeah, some people can barely afford a spore syringe without resorting to Ramen Noodles for a week. Several of these people have PMed me a thanks in the years since I wrote this.

No.

Use cotton. Especially DO NOT use polyfill or any other synthetic fiber because it will melt.

Real cotton is cheap and you can get it at every drug store in the world.

Whats the advantages of an alcohol lamp vs. a lighter? Does it not leave that black residue on the needle like a lighter does?

Exactly. The alcohol burns clean. It still darkens the metal with the heat, but you don't get the soot you do with a regular lighter.

fine you win I'll break down and make one!!! I will point out though that soot from candle (my normal method) heat has never posed contam problems. However, if this doesn't result in a marked increase in the speed that my syringe nettle heats up in expect a angered reply.

sorry saladfingers must have my spellchecker under his control or it's that I started drinking at 4 this afternoon.

Anyway I'm wondering if 99.1% isopropal alcohol would substitute for denutured alcohol or where you could find denatured alcohol. Someone must know about this.

I just did a search, and it says you can indeed burn isopropyl in an alcohol-lamp, but whatever amount of water in it brings the temp of the flame down.. So if you are gonna use isopropyl, def don't use the 70% -  use the purest kind you can get.

dually noted from the both of yall. But fooman if you don't know me enough by now you might know how much I hate using bigbox stores, you mentioned almost every one of them. I'll have to have a Buddhist priest bless this thread now to undo your bad voodoo. That means I'll have to use my account at mycotopia, that I swear I only opened to view all of the BNL thread.

 I know a lot of people that share your view on the big corporations. I try to avoid them myself, but it doesn't make sense for me to drive out of my way to go to a mom and pop shop for the same items when it means I'll have to buy more fuel and make the oil companies richer. Everything we buy these days comes from asia or some third world country sweat shop anyway.

I created this alcohol lamp the other day and filled it with 97% isopropyl alcohol... I tried to flame sterilize my scalpel however it left a black residue on the blade... any ideas as to why this happened?

Soot leftover is related to the flame.. A yellow/orange flame is full of soot, while a light-blue flame is not.. What color was your flame?

Who told you to use isopropyl? Read the directions in the first post. This is like people wondering why white rice didn't work for their PF tek.

Use denatured alcohol. The 3% of whatever else is in the iso alcohol is now on your scalpel.

Isopropyl is still burnable, although I'd recommend the denat.. The remaining % in it is just water, but it's not good for the flame cuz it cools it down.. If this kid's stuff was covered w/ soot, I guarantee he wasn't burning a nice clean blue flame..

I just use a can of Sterno... they cost like a dollar at party supply stores ect. Could prolly find them at walmart too.

They burn clean, and I never smell any fumes ect from them.

Terence McKenna Said:
"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."

Earlier today I went to walmart and bought some denatured alcohol (the same exact container that is pictured in the TEK).  My flame still is not completely blue though... although it no longer leaves black stuff on my scalpel!

Even though the flame isn't completely blue, it does turn my needle red fairly quickly... does this mean that it is hot enough?  (I obviously don't know much about this)

Yes. By the time the needle glows red, the red area is completely sterile.

Okay I'm making my lamp tonight, but I don't think I have said drill bit.  We don't really own an array of tools, just random assortments of things here and there.  Does the hole have to be a precise size or could I go slightly smaller/bigger?  I'm just asking for safety's sake.  I don't want any flares.

as long as your wick fits the hole nicely it wont matter but either way be careful with any flame source

Well I gave it a whirl and it works great.  This'll be so much cleaner than using a bic.
