Q for DB kit users
    #318091 - 05/15/01 06:20 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

OK, I've made myself a DB style bigplasticboxofshit, which has been spawned with B+, and is looking good:) The thing that worries me with the DB kit, and my setup, is that the sides of the substrate are exposed to light. Does this not cause unwanted pinning at the sides? Or is it not a problem?

I'm not a DB user, sorry, but was just wondering what formula you used to make your compost.

I didn't make it, I bought it. "Westland Traditional Farmyard Manure" It looks to be a mix of cow shit, partially composted straw and wood chips. Works very well, getting good amounts of shrooms from tiny amounts of spawn. Seems to be pretty contam resistant too...

The pins still grow upwards and grow out of the shit while pressed agains the side of the box. Down side is that you have to dig down into your collonized substrate when harvesting them.

Maybe you could just put some electrical tape around the sides of the container to stop pinning at the side.

I can see a world where this is no poverty and no war, I can also see us attacking that world because they would never expect it.

jonnyshaggs.. that's doesn't work. The light travels within the thickness of the plastic. Sort of a fiber-optic effect.

Hmmm, I should have thought about this before I bought the box. Pinning is initiated by the light from the blue end of the spectrum, yes? So if the box was transparent red, pinning shouldn't occur at the sides, maybe. Which is a lot of help, since my box is indigo/violet.....

If it is red, it is reflecting red light. The rest (cyan & yellow) get through.

You would have to have a range of colors to filter out the sensitive spectrum. Pretty much, if it's at all translucent you'll get pinning. Best would no doubt be a completely opaque material which you see mostly in 'real' tupperware products. They used to have a hunter green material that stopped all light..

Yeah those pins on the side are a major bitch. If I were you I would just tape & foil the sides and after your harvest take it off just to check if there are any.

Yeah, right, so if I was inside a transparent red box it would look green to me? I think not. What you said applies to opaque materials, transparent materials look a certain colour cos they _let through_ only one colour, the red you see is light shining through from the other side having the green and blue cut out.
The CMYK system of colours applies to reflected light, RGB to transmitted light. Have I made myself clear?;)
Sorry to go on, but I don't like to be (mistakenly) corrected in high school physics:crazy:

My understanding of the physics/chemistry/neurology of how we see colours as we do is way more advanced than "high school lessons", which was why your answer irritated me slightly. But, you weren't to know that, so sorry for getting nippy with you:)

yeah well master of physics/chemistry/neurology, it seems you should take courses in common sense ;). just dump your substrate out after you harvest your top layer, and then pick the mushies from the sides. if i were you i wouldnt prevent them from growing, because the little narled ones that grow there tend to be more potent.

LOL, I feel humbled:) As long as shrooms on the sides aren't a contam risk, I'm perfectly happy to let them grow.

hehe.. No offense taken. I just didn't want to type a long proof either.. I'm not sure of what I said, but was referring to the light conducted within the thickness of the container. And no, I still don't want to dig through fiber optics manuals to 'prove' my assertion. I'm real sorry if I lead you astray on the phisics. The rule for that, as I remember it, is the opposite of what it would logically seem.

The reality of it, though, is that you'll most likely get pinning all over. From what I've read, the kit is only good for about 3 flushes before it starts to contam anyway. Side & bottom growing shrooms that you can't get to will probably not accelerate that process much. Hehe.. That's just hearsay, I could be wrong about that too! ;)

its good to see that you can take a joke. most people get all bent out of shape at stuff like that. this is how the community should be though; filled with a sense of humor.\

the pins on the side are fine though, and really shouldnt get contaminated. i would suggest putting a drain hole in the bottom on one of the sides, and then getting a drain plug for it. that way, if there is too much water build up, and it starts reaching your pins on the side you can drain it out and all will be fine.

have fun with those ones that grow on the side too. youll find that they will dry less then the others too, and thats why they look small already.
