Drying bulk leaf.
    #3182135 - 09/26/04 10:04 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I recently harvested all my salvia, which left me with just over two pounds of fresh leaf. I was going to just spread it out thinly and wait for it to air-dry, but then I thought about using the tumble dryer!
I cleaned out all the clothes fluff from inside with a damp cloth, and cleaned out the dust collector. I put the leaves in, and after 40 minutes on high they were bone dry. Some leaves get broken up inside, but everything small is collected by the dust collector, which is why you have to clean it out first.
It seems like a very good way to dry bulk leaf, but I have never heard of anyone doing it this way before... I can't think of any other way to dry two pounds in 40 minutes! A big advantage of this method is that it never gets too hot, unlike ovens, where you run the risk of burning it.
Hopefully this idea will help some people out!

When it was dry I removed all the stalks and ground it up, and I now have exactly 100g of lovelly ready-to-smoke salvia  :crazy2:.

I dont like using heat when drying anything.. When it comes to leaves just string a piece of thread threw all the leaves then hang some where,,, good conversation piece..;)

When I dry my Psychotria v. leaves I just spread them out on a counter top in doors and wait. I think this and stringing them up as mentioned before are good methods because you'd be preserving potency by not applying heat.

Of course that's just my opinion...

That's how I used to do it, too. But I couldn't be bothered to string up 2lb, for a start I don't have room to do so!
Anyway, I haven't tried any of this salvia yet, but I don't see anything in salvinorin A's structure that would be significantly vulnerable to moisture at 70*C without any catalysts...
We will see when I bioassay!

Edit: in fact, I would personally say that you're MORE likely to suffer losses from enzymes in the`plant if you dry it slowly at room temp, compared to drying it quickly at elevated temps...

That's true depending on the nature of the chemical involved. I freez all dried material after drying is completed to maintain potency indeffinitely.

Just to confirm, it's still good  :tongue2:.

I might extract some to get salvinorin crystals, just as a novelty, but I prefer smoking standard leaf. My sally tolerance doesn't seem to be high any more, and I don't like going in too deep anyway..!

I'd be worried of losing the trichomes, but then again perhaps you didn't.

How thoroughly did you mix the material from the dust collector with the rest of the leaves? It is possible the finer material would be more concentrated, kind of a "salvia kif".

The dust collector is pretty coarse, so it was just collecting things above about one square millimetre. It's possible that some trichomes were lost, although I don't think they'd really be big enough to get knocked off easily. Either way, I didn't notice any loss of potency over stringing the leaves up!

At the moment I'm drying some calea, I'm interested to see if it influences mild salvia experiences. I get few effects from it on its own, but I think they might be more noticable when combined with a small amount of salvia...
