I recently discovered oven bags....its written on them, that they wont stand more heat than 200 celcius.... is that enough to sterilize, for example, birdseed? is birdseed compatible with oven bags? How much time and at what temperature do u sterilize??? Any tips i should know??? Any teks?

hi, 200C = 392F, (pretty sure about that one- online converter ::grin:: ). thats pretty hot! TMC says that the relationship of pressure and temp at constant volume for 15psi is 15psi=250F. so im guessing an oven bag *would* make it thru pc'ing at the standard 15psi (HQ's always wanted to try, but she didnt know about the temp ranges)! its really neat; you could then hypothetically use 3m's no shake grain tek with an oven bag instead of an *autoclavable* science supply bag, and with birdseed instead of wheat... i think i read at the donkey that the bags shouldnt touch the sides of the pc for fear of melting- or was it the bottom? must have been the sides, b/c of course it has to sit on the bottom, plus the water on the bottom of the pc should keep it from melting ::grin:: mine didnt, but some pc's come with a rack to hold jars, maybe that could be used to hold the bags away from the sides of the pc? thanks for the temp ranges on the oven bags- they sound neat.

hi :) - i just used this one: http://www.onlineconversion.com but if you go to yahoo, you can just always search for any different kind of online conversion that may not be on this page :) gluck w/ the oven bags, HQ's gonna try them too with wheat and maybe some seed (seperately) too in a bit... shes excited to see how you do with the bs (and to read more responses about the bags if you get em)...

Aweek and a half ago I pressure cooked whole wheat in a LOOK! oven bag and later innoculated with Pan Cyan spores. It is colonizing very well with no sign of contams. On Sat. I microwaved dung/compost in a bag for 20 min. to sterilize it. These bags hold up well to all kinds of heat. I believe they're made of mylar. The only problem is that they tear easily, so you have to be careful when handling them.

Hey ar393- If 1c=33f, does 2c=66f? Nope. It is all about the baseline of 0c=32f. Thus if 100c=212f, it means that raising the temp 100c will raise the temp 212-32=180f. So 200c=212+180=392f. (Sorry, I can't help myself, I'm a math grad student :P)
