Dunking a caing for second flush?

After you pick flush #1 - what's the best way (if any) to dunk a casing to prepare for flush# 2?

Assumming it is a tray of WBS, Straw, & Poo cased with coir and vermiculite

Do you remove the old casing and then dunk it in water in the fridge for 12 hours?

Do you recase it and then cover it with tinfoil for a few days and prepare it to pin again?

I usually patch any divots left from picking shrooms and mist down to "near saturation" shut the lights off and don't peek at it for a few (4-5) days then initiate fruiting once again, I find the myc needs this rest period and build up energy to put forth the second flush NOT waste it on another casing run! Word :wink: GL bro
I should mention FAE runs 24/7 coolmist :wink:

You don't really have to do anything at all. Just wait. The second flush will come when it's ready.

I find covering open areas very helpful especially when it comes to the sixth, seventh or eighth flushes. Also I find better flushes and I don't mind saving on the light bill whenever possible. But you are correct nature will take its course. :wink:

I like the sound of 6th, 7th, or 8th flushes!!!!!

Hey when you pick a flush and 90% of them are fully grown and mature - what do you do if there are 20 or so smaller, younger, undeveloped shrooms left over do you let them grow?

It doesn't hurt to just pick them all....you lose a bit of size in picking the smaller, immature guys but it is better than disturbing your mycellium wants it starts to fruit its second flush. You can let them grow to there full size if you want, but in my opinion it is worth the total harvest in the long run.

You guys need to understand that the initial pinset creates your first and second flush pins. The second flush will not flush until the first is off, and that second 20 or so in your case could actually turn into twenty very nice sized shrooms. Now follow me, your myc could put forth the effort/energy to producing these shrooms or you could pick them all off and and force the myc to use it's energy to produce more pins. Now realize that twenty is just the second flush you still have flushes after that, many hopefully and they will need all the energy they can get so my advice to you is, don't make them work any harder than necessary. GL
BTW try to replace any missing casing soil now even adding a light layer Your twenty will be fine (if they're not aborts) and during the second flushes growth your third flush will be forming. :wink:

A friend of mine patches as hyphae does but then, very slowly pours cold bottled water over the top of it letting it absorb all of it. It usually takes about 10 minutes for it to soak everything up, but then you have a fully hydrated casing, works very well for my friend.

hmm, so none of you guys dunk you casings?

I have a popcorn/coir casing that I'm going to be picking the first flush off of tonight. Right after that I was planning on dunking it for 12 hours by taking it out of the pan, putting it in a large rubbermaid filled with R/O water, and putting it in my fridge overnight.

Sound Okay or should I just patch and mist her down real good?

My friend used to dunk his casing like you are thinking about, but since he has started just pouring water over it while it sucks it up, he has been getting the same results with much less hassle and time....

Hey Hyphae - How does the substrate know that all the mushies are picked and when to pin again? Does it go into a dormant stage from the lack of nutrients being drawn from it or something? - Thanks
