Schultz's Vermiculite sucks royal

This is to those of you still using vermiculite for any of your operations - if you buy Schultz brand, I urge you to switch now. I bought a bag for substrate use today, and upon opening it discovered it was fucking humongous! It was waaaay to big for use as casing, substrate, or 1/2 pint jar PF seal. And, worst of all, there was no indication whatsoever on the bag as to the size of hte vermiculite! They just sell the various sizes side by side at the store without telling which is which. Anyways, anybody else had this happen to them?

Scott's vermiculite is a good medium size but stores in my area no longer carry it. I just bought verm from a local nursery and got the large size also.

I'm surprised you even found Schultz's. Most stores have taken it off the shelves due to the asbestos scare!

I have used scotts and their shit was small as hell and had alot of sticks and leaves in it. Then I got a big ass bag of big verm from the nurshery. Hey man if it's too big just toss it in the blender and chop for a few seconds.

HQ's never had a prollem w/ schultz' size of verm. after reading about the asbestos scare on their site, it seems the verm comes from many different mines... perhaps the one in your area produces coarser verm than mine? ace still carries schultz verm.

I'm using schultz'z verm. for my first project and the size seems to be just fine. I innoculated 1 week ago and most if not all jars are showing growth of at least .25$ worth of area growth or better

After trying many various brands of vermiculite, I've found Schultz brand to be my favorite. I've never had a problem with it although I have experienced difficulty (if you want to call it that) with other brands, such as Scotts and Sta-Green (the latter of which I don't recommend but will still work).

The last time I bought verm shultz was the only brand I was able to chose from. This was at Lowes. Anyway there were several bags on the shelf and many varied in size and moisture content. The bags were inconsistent. After shopping through several bags I found the two that fit my needs perfectly He who stands on toilet gets high on pot.Edited by dmb420 on 05/06/01 12:17 AM.

Shultz is normally very good sized, but after speaking to KaoS and seeing the size of the verm, they are rather huge. Anyway Kaos, since you are no longer going to cultivate, I wish you a good time with what ever you do next.

I had used Shultz's vermiculite so many times that when I went to buy another bag recently, I was shocked as to how big the chunks were. What's up with that? It's a good brand but they really should sell different sizes and indicate which is which on the bag. The stuff I got could work for casing but it won't for the verm seal, way too big. In Shultz's defense though, most of the other brands I've checked out don't indicate size either. I'm kind of wary of buying more verm only to find out it's not small enough. I'm not exactly Mr. Moneybags.

I don't know my brand but I bought it at a place where they sold it as isolation material. I was fine grade, great verm. I will lookup the brand and post again soon!

Thi might be a stupid question, but isn't it possible to grab a hammer or whatever and break down the vermiculite to smaller pieces?

hammer wouldnt work, but a coffee grinder does, to some extent. if you ground your own brf you prolly already have a grinder you can use.

Grinder, blender, and even just taking a handful and rubbing your hands together all work for breaking down the larger pieces. I use the last method and it works fine, and is good exercise for the ole forearms :)
