Coconut Long Fiber-casing

I went and found coco fiber at a local high-end nursery here. It was not sold in bricks. It came in a bag labeled coconut long fiber. Says it is "natures best for growing orchids & Bromeliads". The bag is 1/4 cubic foot for $2.60. The bag says nothing about being treated with trych. However, I am gonna pasturize it anyway. HERE is my question: The fibers in the bag are really long! The strands are like 8-10 inches. It is all like a mat. Should I cut the fiber up into smaller strands (maybe 1-2 inches)?. This stuff lokks like it could be hard to spread out as a casing. Does the bricked stuff look like this when it rehydrates or is it more shredded? Outside that it looks like it is going to be a mighty fine material for a casing. Any thougts?

i bought the exact same stuff that you did and pasteurized it. before that i cut it up real well didnt take long because its so thin. casings blew up with colonization. i would say its 2-3 times faster than 50/50...plus its easier to spread when you cut and you can add nutrients to your expense. good luck!

yes, the correct name for it was in fact coco liner. but its the same thing as coco fiber, but in strands. the coco fiber is a shredded version of the coco liner. its almost like a powder so i bought the coco liner because i was in desperate need for a cheap casing. cut it cup, boiled it, and it turned out alright, also added some serian rue, but i didnt notice any potency increase there.
