Do some reading on L. Ron Hubbard. His "religion" has used strong arm tactics on elderly people and his wife was once imprisoned for wiretapping a government office. There are some fishy things in this "religion". It seems more like an engine of personal profit. I loved Hubbard's writing, though...Battlefield Earth was a great book.

You do realize that Scientology is strongly anti-drug, right?

At least Scientology doesn't tell me that I will suffer the wrath of Satan's greasy cock in fiery Hell for all Eternity for smoking a joint or dropping some acid.

Besides.. you do realize that the Gov't we live in is strongly anti-drug, right?

An excerpt from the site:

A DESCRIPTION OF SCIENTOLOGY
Scientology: Scio (Latin) know, logos (Greek) the word or outward form by which the inward thought is expressed and made known. Thus, Scientology means knowing about knowing.

The full story of the development and codification of Scientology can be found in scores of books, more than 15,000 pages of technical writing and more than 3,000 taped lectures. All told, these works represent a lifetime of research by L. Ron Hubbard to discover a workable means to set men spiritually free ? to replace ignorance with knowledge, doubts with certainty and misery with happiness.

Today, the fruits of L. Ron Hubbard?s work are available to anyone who wishes to reach for them. And no matter how different Scientologists may be ? whether teachers and businessmen, housewives and athletes, artists and secretaries ? they hold one vital factor in common: having significantly bettered their lives, they know that Scientology works.

Nothing in Scientology, however, need be taken on faith. Its truths are self-evident, its principles are easily demonstrable and its technology can be seen at work in any church of Scientology. One need only open the door and step through.

Scientology is a twentieth-century religion. It comprises a vast body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths, and prime among those truths: Man is a spiritual being endowed with abilities well beyond those which he normally envisages. He is not only able to solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also to achieve new states of awareness he may never have dreamed possible.

In one form or another, all great religions have held the hope of spiritual freedom ? a condition free of material limitations and misery. The question has always been, however, how does one reach such a state, particularly while still living amidst a frantic and often overwhelming society?

Although modern life seems to pose an infinitely complex array of problems, Scientology maintains that the solutions to those problems are basically simple and within every man?s reach. Difficulties with communication and interpersonal relationships, nagging insecurities, self-doubt and despair ? each man innately possesses the potential to be free of these and many other concerns.

Scientology offers a pathway to greater freedom.

While the hope for such freedom is ancient, what Scientology is doing is new. The way it is organized is new. The technologies with which it can bring about a new state of being in man are likewise new.

Because Scientology addresses man as a spiritual being, it stands completely apart from other religions which see man as a product of his environment or his genes ? fixed in the limitations under which he was born.

Rather, Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life. Based upon the tradition of fifty thousand years of thinking men, it is built upon the fundamental truths of life. From these principles, exact methods by which one can improve conditions were derived; and unlike other efforts of improvement, which offered only rules by which men should live, Scientology offers real tools for use in everyday life. Thus, it does not depend upon a system of beliefs or faith. The emphasis is squarely on an exact application of its principles toward the improvement of one?s life and the world in which we live.

To understand exactly how Scientology is utilized, something should be known of the track of research L. Ron Hubbard traveled and the antecedent of Scientology ? Dianetics.

On the same note, science is an ever progressing art. To keep pace with this art, university/governmental analytical equipment would be needed for further research. History of the arts of science, in physics/math/chemistry may be helpful when understanding is obtained. I?m not sure where the direction of scientology is headed, but it would be interesting to know how they experiment for further knowledge.

It's a major con job geared towards separating you from your money so the guys at the top can live in big houses, drive Ferraris, and run casino style churches. The church bought copies of Dianetics taking a loss, then resold them back to the warehouses to keep it on the best seller list. They treat their celebrity members (like John Travolta and Tom Cruise) like kings to get big endorsements. In Florida several were jailed for threatening elderly people's lives to get large donations. It is more like organized crime than religion. When you make it to the inner circle it is revealed that Hubbard was the incarnation of God on Earth and that he was the ultimate messiah. Do your research.

Any religion based on science isn't a religion based on knowledge anyway but a quest for knowledge. Science is based on theories and no matter how many people often believe a theory is watertight...give it a bit of time and it will be proved incorrect or inaccurate. For the most part anyway.

I agree. This doesnt seem like an authentic religion to me (Religion being a bridge in which you can find God)

Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism (because it is the path of god-realization as well).....these are religions.

Scientology is a cult.

rofl doesn't scientology request that you give them a bunch of money?

science is not a religion - there is no morality and no spirit involved in science, and I thought that was what religion was all about....

I don't know SHIT though man

science is not a religion - there is no morality and no spirit involved in science, and I thought that was what religion was all about....

Allow me to quote Trendal who put it so eloquently:

Science is a "religion", in many ways. Science is an abstracted search for the mind of "God". Its methods differ from orthodox religion...but I think it seeks the same end as spirituality: to understand this world in which we are placed, and hopefully to achieve a glimpse of the mind of God.

Many scientists are also religious people. Being devoted to one does not necessarily exclude the other. In science, we use the tools God has given us in an attempt to understand Nature (the Universe, or "all-that-exists") and in understanding Nature we come closer to understanding where Nature came from (God).

I, and many others, have chosen to use Science in our quest because it allows reproducibility of observation/experiment. I can measure the strength of the EM force and tell everyone my results...they can then go perform the same measurement and come up with (hopefully) the same values. In this manner we are able to construct an image of Nature that is common to everyone.

Exactly.

Science is about accruing verifiable facts while religion is based on faith in things that cannot be proven. If God were a known entity you would not need a religion, you would just look up and say "Hey, God, what's goin' on?" and get an answer.

Science and Religion were both originally formed from one primary drive and intention of Human Nature: To explore and seek The Truth and understand Nature and the Universe.

The difference is that traditional orthodox religion seeked truth in absence of factual and verifiable knowledge.. which led to assumptions, observations, and such created by man.. which created beliefs that were most often superstitious, or superficial and incomplete. Mankind finds it rather difficult (naturally) to think in a vacuum... hence, an explanation MUST be had, be it fallacious or otherwise.

Science seeks truth in a much more evolved and advanced way. Science actually discovers facts and truths of what we seek to understand and learn about Nature and the Universe, rather than jump to externalized observational conclusions like many religions and primitive tribes have..as well as children, as well as countless cultures have in ancient history. What do all of those have in common as far as knowledge? Not too hard to figure that one out.

Generally speaking;
Science discovers knowledge.
Religion creates "knowledge".

Which of the two has the more stable history of such knowledge?

The reason why I believe that Science will advance and eventually supersede most if not all traditional and orthodox religion, is simply because: Knowledge is power, and it has more potential and power than any religion in the world to get closer to the truth of God, The Universe, and Nature.

The observation that 'Science is simply about accruing verifiable facts' is simply a superfical and incomplete predication. That is a PART of what Science is about.
