You can make one using a water heater (large copper tank thing) and a water heater plus thermostat. All parts are easy to get hold of at a plumbers merchants, or second hand.

My friend made one out of a great big ice chest with a wall paper steamer hooked up to it and a big ass thermometer that gets stuck through the substrate and is readable from the outside. It seems to work fine.

If you have a gas stove then you are in Go to the hardware store and get a medium sized METAL garbage can. Then go to the grocery store and pick up a candy thermomter. You put what you want pasturized in the can Fill with water Put some weight something on top to keep it under the water Get water temp to 174 degs Keep it there for 3 hours. What is the need for some special Pasteuizer??? All you are doing is heating up some water????

Just use a big pot and a candy thermometer on a hot plate. I pasturize my straw/dung for 1.5 hrs and only need to check the temperature 3 or 4 times before its done. No big deal at all!

Herr,
Sorry for this dumb wannabee question, but here it goes anyways...
When one pasturises cow manure, does his kitchen smell like a stable ?

The books I have here say 170-180 for 3-6 hours depending on how much volume of shit or straw you are cooking. And a quote from paul stament book says 174 deg. So.... thats what I do. Mabey with small amounts on the stove, 1 1/2 hours is cool. But we also grow oysters and I use a 55 gallon drum. 174 deg for 4 hours...... Bails of hay LOL

this is wut i was told... the manure i used WAS NOT FRESH so it didnt smell, it came in a bag from the store, and when i serlized it, it didnt smell, and when i spawned it it didnt smell until about 5 days later, smelled like a wet baby diaper, that meant it was CONTAMINATED ... thats wut the man says! .....

Hmmmm, I have Stamets books but haven't referenced them for pasteurization. The shroomery FAQ states that you should pasturize for 1HR and NEVER go above 170F
I haven't had a problem using this technique.. 3 HRS just seems like overkill.
