Peat moss ph..is this okay?
    #3034552 -

I can't find it around anywhere, so I'm ordering online. It says it has a PH of 3.5-4.5. Is that okay?

Actually pH of 7 - 7.5 is more of what you want for a casing.

You can use peat moss based potting soil instead.

Any idea what this is called in germany? I went to a gardening store and they have no idea what peat moss is.

See if they call it spaghnam. Also, a ph of 7.5 to 9 is even better. Live mycelium can colonize it just fine, but contaminant spores will have a hard time germinating and/or growing.

Peat based casings can be adjusted to 6.5 to 7.5, high pH is of no benefit at all. Trich is a casings worst enemy and loves acidic environments, this is why we buffer. Shrooms always do best in a neutral environment just like in their natural environment. Understand myc does not consume the casing it just grows through it this leads to a wide acceptance in the pH range. So buffer your peat with lime (not hydrated), oystershell flour or powderized eggshell and you'll have a stable pH in your casing, enough to carry you through 10+ flushes. A word on hydrated lime, it works but be careful it is "hot" and it doesnt last long but it acts immediately so a 1-1.5tsp. per quart of casing will do ya fine IN ADDITION to one of the long term buffers described above. Said with all respects to RR, Mycota(6T) still lives strong, "mimic nature whenever possible" GL guys
