What about using 100% Peat Moss for casing?
    #1524709 - 05/06/03 02:02 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I was wondering if using only peat moss for casing layers would work out. Only reason I ask is cause the local shop ran out of vermiculite and has been really slow about getting new shit. A couple of cakes are birthed and need to be cased asap so i was wondering if i could use just straight peat for the casing.

Anyone?

They're GT and PESA btw.

Well if thats all ya have, it'll work. Since they will pin inside the jar you really dont need anything at all, it just helps them keep hydrated so anything you do will help. Maybe just use the inner resivour tek. You drill or otherwise make a hole in the center of the cake and insert a straw which you can water it through. The water is being pushed into the cake by gravity so just because it takes water doesnt mean it needs to be watered...

Wouldn't this present a PH problem?

Thats right, they will be more prone to contam, unless you can correct the Ph.
There are many things you can use to buffer the Ph in the peat moss, lime, oyster shell, baking soda. Basically contams like an acidic environment so you add this stuff to basify the PH of the casing but if you overdo it, it will inhibit the mushrooms from growing also and they'll grow out around the edge n not through the casing.

Does pure calcium carbonate that you buy in a health store have any Magnesium? Do you have to grind it or do you like shake/sprinkle powder out or what.

Pure Calcium Carbonate is ideal. It contains no Magnesium, or only trace amounts. You want to purchase a fine powder and mix it into your Casing.

You can get pure hydrated lime at any supermarket in the canning section... it's pickling lime... ingredients: Hydrated Lime

TMC recommends calcium carbonate, in the form of chalk or limestone flour.
exactly how much to use depends on what else is in the casing, and it's ph.
TMC gives 2 basic formulas.
1. 4 parts coarse peat moss
2. 1 part limestone flour
3. 1/2 part limestone grit
4. 2-2.25 parts water
or--
1. 2 parts coarse peat
2. 1 part chalk
3. 1-1.25 parts water

1/2-1 part coarse vermiculite can be added to either formula to improve water retention and fruiting performance.

Alright, sounds like 100% peat is a bad idea. Looks like i might be moving onto someother casing substrate then.

Peat is very acidic (not good, unless ph is adjusted). You would need to buffer it with hydrated lime (my foaf uses Hoffmans brand, in a box at most garden supply store for about $ 3 or 4). Then test with a ph meter to insure you are in the 7 to 8 range. Then add crushed chicken egg or oyster shell as a long term buffer. 50/50+ is a good casing mix recipe. My foaf adds some coir - along with the other ingrediants.

Could you tell me a bit more about using baking soda as a PF buffer, or link me to information about it? Thank you.

Lime is good to basify the PH, but it may make the PH too basic.

Use Calcium Carbonate, even at large quantities you can't super-basify your mixture, unlike lime.

Maybe 6T had one bong hit to many - tonight. :smirk:

But isnt that like saying.......... water is wet, but to much water, is to wet

Use a ph testing probe/meter. You get it right - every time.
