How to erase everything and start over on a computer?

My old computer has become so slow now because there is so much crap on it. I just tried to do a new install of windows, but some things were still saved on the hard drive. I want to get rid of everything and basically start over like the computer was new. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? Thanks

i'd like to do this too, but everytime i go to format or try to start it over i get this message 'access denied' because of some old account that was on the computer that's not even there anymore.
