Alcholism, culture and Irish folk...
    #2975372 -

I've often asked people what they would consider
the definition of an "alcoholic" and I invariably
get different answers. In some cultures, I'm asuming
Irish (only from sterotypes), drinking seems to be
considered a natural part of life and celebration.
In islamic cultures a sip of wine would not only
make u an alcoholic but u cast u straight into
God's evil books :smirk: (note: one misconception about
islam is that drinking is forbidden - it's not, but
it's considered very very BAD...same thing I guess...almost
- Pork, piggys etc however are FORBIDDEN).
Anyhoos, I drink every night and I know quite a few people
who do...
am I an alcoholic ?

BTW, I've read Arnolds Biography and was interested to
read that in his youth while training for the Mr Universe
contest he would often go out with a friend and some
"chicks" into the woods with barbells and weights and beer
and would drink and lift (squats) and make love till they
they couldn't lift anymore and would collapse... sounds like
quite the orgy :smirk:
also when asked about drugs once, Arnold is quoted to have
said that in his day he "inhaled, exhaled everything".
He can also be seen smoking a joint in "Pumping Iron"
the film that followed him through his 6th or 7th Mr Olympia
title (he won another one in 1980 when he made a comeback
while filming Conan - I was really into the Bodybuilding
scene a while ago so I know all this useless trivia...)

I drink every night...only 1-3 glasses of wine or beers to accompany a nice spliff.

You're only an alcoholic if you can't do without it, I guess.

This planet is an alcoholic.

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

Your an alcoholic if alcohol interferes with you living your life. And from what I saw the Irish, Scottish, and English love their booze.

A good description of an alcoholic, I think, would be that: "One drink is too much, and twenty is never enough."

I'm one. I'm trying to stop, but it's a very strange and powerful disease!

Do you get angry or upset if you're prevented from drinking during a particular night?

I believe the 4 questions counselors ask is:
1) Have you ever drank to excess?
2) Has drinking ever interfered with
your work or family?
3) Does drinking take up a lot of your time?
4) Have you ever tried to stop and couldn't?

Something along these lines indicates, apparently, that you might have a problem. This is a particularly interesting subject for me, being an addictive personality. It's a funny thing that we can want and not want something. That we "can't control our behavior". Impulse control etc. I think i'll start a seperate post about this and see if it gets any responses.

stereotypes are infectious ignorance. people like to believe that the irish are/were drunkards because it's fun to believe it.

the irish weren't big drinkers in the past. sorry, they just weren't. in fact, irish catholics were opressed for a long time and werent allowed land, cattle, jobs, or anything of the like. all they could have was some shitty land and some potatoes. drinking was pretty much the last thing on their minds. they ate milk/meat once and maybe twice every year....drinking wasn't really high on the priority list.....

i know a guy that loves to party and is proud of his irish catholic heritage because he comes from a long line of drinkers and whatnot.

but he's a dumbass.
