A Gifting Culture
    #4234675 - 05/29/05 11:25 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I don't know how many of you know much about Burning Man or have ever been there. It's by far the most interesting gathering I have ever participated in.

On of the things highly encouraged there is gifting. In a hot desert environment where self sufficiency is encouraged, newbies or anyone can forget important things or run out. Now I know that lots of money is spent getting to the Man and setting up some of the most beautiful camps and discos and light shows anywhere. Given that people are encouraged to give to each other. Not sell not even barter is encouraged. Just gifting is encouraged.

I never thought much about it until I started feeling a difference in how I was relating to everyone. Nothing to sell, no limited resources to battle over. No wondering what the other guy wants. The difference was amazing. Everyone around me at least, had huge smiles and grins. You'd be sitting in your camp and a group of naked waiters would waltz in with serving trays of snacks and drinks and be gone almost before you could thank them. It became very contagious. You started to look for ways to give to  others. You watched out for someone in need. You still took care of yourself first. But you still had so much left to give. It changed me and the way I see people. I have a lot more faith in the innate goodness of humanity. People were just free to be themselves and then they wanted to give some away.

I encourage anyone and everyone to experience Burning Man. I thought it was just a big jam/orgy/drug fest.  But I was surprised how it was also one of the most spiritually enlivening weeks of my life.  :sun:

Check out the Burning Man web site.

I think the idea of a gift economy sounds nice, but I don't really think it would work on a large scale. I think there are certain transactions that would require some form of currency.

Uh-huh. How much did you have to "gift" to the promoters?

Yeah I wonder about that. Maybe some future time. Still it can change the way you feel about it, just experiencing it for a week.  :mushroom2:

The only money exchange sanctioned there is for ice, and coffee in center house. All the profits go to the local community.  :mushroom2:

Please read my origional post where I stated that folks pay alot to set up their camps, which includes the purchase of tickets. I assumed you might get that from reading what I wrote. Sorry. :mushroom2:

$185.00, Over one million was spent on porta potties alone. The state requires a police force and fire department at a cost of hunderds of thousands of dollars. The BLM permit cost $1,000,000 I believe.

Over thirty thousand people attend. It's an incorperated city, the 4th largest in Nevada for that week.  :mushroom2:

Sucker?

Catch up with my posts? My first post asked the same as the second and third. Must asking a question be like pounding a nail?

Bascially, the promoters made at least a million while getting others to eschew profiteering in the name of spirituality. Nice racket.

I don't know how much they made? Send me the link please so I can see that figure.

Maybe it's a racket for them I really don't know them . I do know it was the best money I spent for the value I got in a long time. I met great people, tripped balls in the street. Talked to people about everything under the sun. Many people had no intent on spiritual things and just wanted to party. Some of us wanted both. Or just about anything else. Like being naked for days, with nobody freaking out. Nothing much to buy so you could forget your wallet for awhile. I really liked that part the best. I don't think the promoters, said it was a spiritual event only. Also art, music, sex, drugs, crafts, just like any other promoted event. I never expected them to put up a city and organize it for free.

Well technically they made 5.55 million on admission alone if Burning Man costs 185.00.

HOWEVER, it does sound pretty badass and I am intrigued. Not sure if I could handle being naked though..but the rest of it sounds cool.

It costs money to run a festival. You have to pay all the workers, musicians if there are any, not to mention whatever is needed to maintain the place. If they make money well good for them, people are happy with the product. Just think how much Bonnaroo probably pulls in every year. Better festivals than McDonalds I say.

You have almost three months to get into "nude" shape. As an old fuck, I get to let everything hang out without worry, cuz - Hey!, I am not supposed to be beautiful anymore.

I am just going there to score drugs and drunk hippie chicks.

I'm trying to find out how much the promoter made Swami. I would still like to get your source for the million dollar figure so I can compare it to what I find if anything. I may not have the sources you do here. I'm not much of an insider, and only go for the fun. Knowing you, I'm sure you didn't just make up a figure to discredit the event, but have a good source for your info.

Let's you and I get to the bottom of this if we can. I'm willing to look at it for sure.
