i really dont know much about casings, bu i think you need about 1/2 inch of it on top.

Thanks Kast. It is compost with mycellium sticking up here and there. So your thought is to leave it until it's fully colonized before coir? 1/2 inch about right as suggested above? Cover each pan with saran wrap in the meantime?

Off the wagon and under the wheel again. Never could do just a little, never could leave it alone.

Covering with saran wrap is an alternative but it isn't completely necessary. I choose not to do this because I'd rather wait an extra day than increase the risk of contamination.

If you were to case it now, you'd be essentially covering the uncolonized compost with saran wrap and for an extended period of time. This microenvironment of stagnant air and the fact that the mycelium has not yet permeated the compost completely means that it'd be a breeding ground for bacterias and the like. Pretend those pans are actually PF style jars and treat them the same way: the same temperatures, humidity level and the absence of light. Once the mycelium has covered the compost then you can case it. Despite what level of casing you use, don't use any more than 1/2 inch.
