I cooked these wheat berries per beef's wheat prep tek. I poked some holes in my jar lids, and rcv'd ez felt over the holes two days prior to prepping the wheat. I dried the grains in the tumble dryer, and then sterilized them in my presto PC.

What did you use as an inoculant? Also what do you mean by tumble dry

Edited to add: NONE of these jars were noc'd. They were PC'd and stored. That white one is straight mold: I had 0 desired spores in my apartment at the time of prepping these.

I used agar. Also pls don't flame me for this, I'm a busy woman with a small apartment But I put the grain in a mesh bag, and the mesh nag in a pillow case, and I dried it in my clothes dryer. The grain prep process is in my journal called "arthur," if it will help elucidate it.

So are you asking what type of contam it is since you didnt innoc it with mycelium?

No one's going to bash or flame you for trying to grow mushrooms, Skrimp.

Those jars are heavily contaminated. Something is way off with your filters I guess. If you PCd those jars and pressure dropped a little around the two hour mark, that in no way explains the mold in your jar. Mold spores don't need much heat to die. Jar no. 3 is bacterial, I mean that is a very real possibility if your cycle was too short / pressure wasn't reached at all points during the cycle etc. But that mold would've been introduced after PCing.

Mold is usually pretty quick to die in a pressure cooker. Generally somewhere around 100c kills most mold.

Just to confirm you didn't use agar on these jars at all? You just pressure cook them and left them somewhere?

If that is the case then I would look at your grain prep and pressure cooking process.

I haven't heard of anyone using a dryer, if it dried out the grains too much then that might cause problems.

What are you using as a pressure cooker and can you tell me about your process with it?

The tumble dryer :grin: I guess it can work. Why not? It’s pretty hard to over-dry properly hydrated grains, and I think you would need to put it in a tumble dryer for a long time before it’s too dry to be properly sterilised. The mould wouldn’t survive 2 hours in your pressure cooker at 15psi even if the grain wasn’t hydrated at all.

Puff, Im using a 23qt presto pressure canner. I follow Bod's pc tek to the T except for when I let it go under pressure :facepalm:

Langten, mostly I was wondering if it was more likely to be my prep or my filters. Since my grain was not over dried (just dry on the outside but still hydrated), and I PC'd it for damn near 3 hours, I guess I can only assume it's my filters. Thanks guys 😔 back to the drawing board

It's good that you let a few uninoculated jars ride for a few days. Definitely the best way to tell whether your PC cycle is working or not.

120 mins for a grain jar that size should be adequate, even with a brief dip to 13 PSI, and even if you didn't do the 10 min steam vent before capping with the PC weight.

The grain prep doesn't matter here. You could store them outside in a bucket of rain and sewage, throw them in soaking wet, and a proper PC cycle would still keep them squeaky clean for eternity.

This is almost certainly the issue.

Contaminants we care about are typically in the one to three micron range. I don't know if that felt is rated at the micron level at all, but my guess is probably not. A few single-micron particles falling through the air between felt fibers seems easy to imagine.

If you want to isolate the variables some more, do another run with some felt lids and some unmodified lids, and let them go uninoculated for awhile. If the unmodified lids stay clean, felt's your issue.

But I wouldn't bother. These stick-on filter discs will sort you out for $8-10. Just one on the outside over the hole is plenty, I don't RTV them on or anything.

How old is your PC? If the rubber seal is starting to get brittle and not seal properly then the PC won't hold the correct PSI to sterilize. You'd know if the seal was going because it drips a lot of water and/or pisses steam out the sides once it gets to pressurizing.

You could try using unmodified one piece lids, all you have to do it get them just barely tight and then back the lid off like 1/8"-1/4", the slightly loose lid allows for GE, and it's pretty damn hard for a contam to work it's way vertically up the threads on the lid/jar. Just gotta remember to tighten the lid down before you handle the jar at all. I run all my grain jars this way, and also all of my Cake Wars 3 cakes are in 8oz jars with unmodified lids :rockon: just a suggestion!

It happens to everyone every now and again.

I had to shut everything down and start over to track down some problems I was having. Just got back to tubs a couple weeks ago.

Keep at it and you'll get there. Once all the wrinkles in your process are worked out, you'll probably always have something going for every stage of growth and failure won't feel so crippling.
